Have you wondered who is behind all our fantastic ASMR Medical Research Week® events in each state?

ASMR Director @IgnitingScience works with some very talented researchers who come together and form our ASMR state committees.

Meet our 2020 NSW committee!

A thread👇 Image
Dr Nunki Hassan @NunkiHassan is the co-convenor of NSW ASMR. She is currently a Research Officer at the @KidsCancerInst and an associate lecturer @UNSW. She is passionate about cancer research and spreading awareness about medical research to the community. Image
Dr Emily Colvin is a researcher working in the Bill Walsh Lab, @KollingINST in Sydney. Emily is interested in all things related to the tumour microenvironment, particularly how targeting non-cancerous cells present in tumours will lead to improved treatments for ovarian cancer Image
Dr Lara Bereza-Malcolm @LBerezaMalcolm is the current Henry Langley Postdoctoral Fellow based in the Sutton lab + the Australian Arthritis & Autoimmune Biobank Collaborative (A3BC) at @KollingINST. Her current work is investigating the microbiome of rheumatoid arthritis patients Image
Dr Rachel Shparberg is a postdoc at @westsydunews. She is currently developing a treatment for cataract disease using human pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) to regenerate the lens. Rachel developed an in vitro model of the nervous system using mouse PSCs in her PhD @Sydney_Uni Image
Dr. Esther Lim is a postdoctoral fellow in the Precision Cancer Therapy (PCT) group at @Macquarie_Uni, and she is currently investigating the transcriptomic and proteomic profiles of melanoma patients treated with selective kinase inhibitors and immunotherapy Image
Dr Allessandro Castorina obtained his PhD in 2009 (Italy). In 2015 he moved to Australia to take on the role of Senior Research Fellow at the @Sydney_Uni. Since 2016, he's been a Senior Lecturer @UTSEngage, and established a lab to investigate the effects of brain inflammation Image
Dr Lay Khoon Too is a postdoctoral researcher at the @Sydney_Uni Sydney. Her research focuses on optogenetic gene- and cell-based approaches for vision restoration, using human retinal biospecimens in her projects to facilitate preclinical research translation Image
Dr Lana McClements @McClementsLana is a Lecturer in Biotechnology at @UTS_Science. Originally from Serbia, she spent 18 years in the UK as a student, clinical pharmacist and academic before moving to Australia in 2018. She is passionate about gender equality & diversity in STEM! Image
Kevin Hendrawan's PhD research @UNSW is primarily driven by his curiosity for the immune system, which we now know is connected to many aspects of our health. He's investigating how stem cell transplantation “reboots” & fixes the immune system in patients with autoimmune disease Image
Emily Vohralik is a PhD student in the Crossley/Quinlan group at @UNSW, investigating the contributions of immune cells, particularly eosinophils, to beige fat metabolism. She joined the NSW Committee to develop her leadership while engaging with the community about science! Image
Tayler Wishart @mylifeinthelab is a PhD candidate at @Sydney_Uni studying sulfated proteoglycans in the eye. She is a passionate science communicator, educator, and advocate for women and leadership & research. Image
Luke Gordon's PhD research combines engineering & medicine to generate a treatment for Parkinson’s disease with light to protect degenerating brain tissue. He's the founder of @ProjectAppear, an initiative to rapidly prototype, evaluate + manufacture PPE for frontline workers Image
Dr Jiao-Jiao Li is an NHMRC ECF/Lecturer at @UTSEngage School of Biomedical Engineering, and Honorary researcher at @Sydney_Uni + @KollingINST. Her research involves regenerative medicine and stem cells. She's currently looking at using them to treat osteoarthritis. Image

Did you know: When a research grant is awarded, the administering institution has to find an extra 20-40% of the value of the grant to cover overheads, simply so the research can proceed? The Job-Ready Bill removes the source of this overhead funding.

That's catastrophic (1/6👇)
The Bill remains only to be voted on by the Senate before it will severely impact on Universities, academics, students and the sector. The ASMR has serious concerns regarding the Bill and how it will adversely affect health + medical research in Australia
At present the votes are 38 for and 37 against, with one cross-bench senator undecided; Stirling Griff @Stirling_G. The only way the Bill can be stopped is if this Senator Griff also votes against it.

The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) was instated to help fund Australian medical research. It has been apparent that the awarding of these disbursements is flawed.

Have first hand examples of administrative or procedural issues with the MRFF? Please contact us.

A thread 👇
The inception of the MRFF gave us two sources of government funding for health and medical research – the @nhmrc grants (which are expertly managed) and the MRFF.
As it turns out, a whopping 65% of these MRFF funds have been awarded without going through a competitive process. This may mean the best science isn’t being funded.
