Let’s talk about getting jobs (picture from LinkedIn)!
I know some of you are in my inbox getting pissed about losing jobs and not getting the type of jobs you deserve. Listen! Tech skills are the new gold!
One person here wrote to me last week who got a job within 3 weeks of landing in Canada as a data analytics specialist with a starting salary of 80K. He came to ask if he lowballed himself. Yes, he did but it’s not a bad place to start from.
I did a session at #AfricanBussinessClub2020 discussing industry 4.0 and stressed Digital Marketing as one of these skills. You didn’t attend that session, you need to go find it and watch it. As a new immigrant, your competitive advantage is tech skills!
Regular skills have saturated the market and your regular skills are no longer providing competitive advantages. The oil and gas market has crashed and regular engineering degrees isn’t cashing in. You need to thinking of the right tech skills to ads if you must stay competitive.
Covid has also expanded tech skill markets and there is no better time than now to get your skills aligned. Do you need a personalized session to analyze your skills and experience and help you understand what you need to acquire for skills?
I am opening up a one session slot on my mentorship program just for this. Come and chat me up for information. You have not moved abroad to suffer, let’s help you stand out and start winning.
Wondering why your LinkedIn exploration isn’t working? You don’t have the right tools in your toolbox and don’t have the competitive skills that the market needs. Let’s get the skills aligned and then go tap LinkedIn like this guy.

To everyone who left Africa in August / September to start a new life in another part of the world, well done but this is just the beginning of the journey. From someone who #Japa in 2008, here are some of my words to you:
✅ Get your regularization papers asap - health card
identity card, social security card, school ID card, driver’s license, open a bank account, deposit all of your money and get a bank card
✅ You need both the people from your continents (Africans abroad) and the locals of your new country. So, start building those
relationships as soon as you can
✅ Join a religious organization. Churches usually will have food drive, free winter jackets and in some cases provide shelter or other support that you may need. So, find a church ASAP

7 years ago, I was wearing my uniform as a color salesperson at Sephora. I was in graduate school, a few days away from 30 yrs, singularly single and had less than 500 CAD to my name every first day of the month after paying my rent😃. I was sharing a basement apartment with two
other students and my landlords were these nice couple who are my age-mate and had their lives together. Oh, how I looked at them and their cute little family with admiration daily asking “God when”.
Those days were rough, graduate school dealt with me.
I had just had a failed animal trial: my experimental rats died and I was having many nights spent at the Canadian Light Source where I collected data.
Oh, serious imposter syndrome, my graduate funding was running out (I had one year to graduate and our funding will run out

One of the hardest decision I have had to make is to turn down a LOVE that came at the WRONG TIME.
I met a guy back in Finland. We were both students by day and cleaners by night. But he was madly in love with me. You could tell him anything about me and he would still love me
Suddenly, I got a PhD admission and full funding in Canada! And it became clear that I was going to move to Canada and leave him behind. Guess what? He proposed! Chei! What was I supposed to do when I know he could kill himself if I said no. Well, I said yes.
But made it clear, I am going to Canada and going alone! If you want me, get yourself to Canada by school or any other method 😃. I am not staying back to marry and have kids while we would both be cleaners and be madly poor and madly in love.
