#JAPA - my side of the story (A thread)

My name is Teinye Boyle, a creative writer, classical musician, Events and Tv producer now pursuing a career in Filmmaking in England, United Kingdom.

For as long as i remember myself, i had been Pro-Nigeria / Anti-Japa up until 2020…. Image
I believed relocating from Nigeria would truncate my destiny as i felt all people do abroad was just pick shifts and pack sh*t - i wanted to be more, i wanted a life of purpose and impact, i wanted to leave a mark and touch lives as many possible
I was building myself a career path and easily morphing into many aspects of my ingenuity just to find balance and of-course, financial sustainability. i had fairly built a name for myself in the event’s industry especially in Pageantry which would enable me author this book 👇🏽 Image

We were here 30 years ago. It was the 1993 political crisis & I remember my father then a secondary school principal, faced with the options of either to #japa & get a life or #sink with the ship called 9ja.
He chose the first, took the academic route first to Germany and then to the USA where he still lives.
Exactly 30 years after ‘m faced with the exact same options… to #run&live or to #stay&sink

To everyone who left Africa in August / September to start a new life in another part of the world, well done but this is just the beginning of the journey. From someone who #Japa in 2008, here are some of my words to you:

✅ Get your regularization papers asap - health card Image
identity card, social security card, school ID card, driver’s license, open a bank account, deposit all of your money and get a bank card

✅ You need both the people from your continents (Africans abroad) and the locals of your new country. So, start building those
relationships as soon as you can

✅ Join a religious organization. Churches usually will have food drive, free winter jackets and in some cases provide shelter or other support that you may need. So, find a church ASAP

I've been following #Japa and I think I should loan my voice to the conversation. I wish those in the UK "Japa boat" well as they start their course next week. I also hope many have given a thought to #Japa the student Visa route gives you limited time to live in the UK #Thread
as a matter of fact, 1yr Master's + 2yrs graduate Visa does not count toward settlement in the UK. So stay humble and focused to achieve whatever your goal is for leaving our beloved in Nigeria at this time. I have a thing or two to share for those who are willing to learn...
In 2020, the UK brought back the 2years post-study work (PSW) which they renamed Graduate Visa. In 2010, Former PM, Theresa May and Home Secretary at the time put an end to PSW visas. When I arrived in the UK in 2011, the PSW Visa was no longer in place...

Quick one to those resuming in September 2022 and January 2023. Canadian schools give out BURSURIES to international studies. This is something a lot of people don't know or probably ignore. As an international student, you may be eligible for bursary of about $1000 to $2000
depending on the school. Feel free to reach out to your school for more information or check your school website, it's free money.
I didn't apply during my time because I was busy with a lot of things then but some of my friends did and got free $$$. So check and ask your school
if they have one and what the requirements are. You may just be getting free $$$ in your second semester that would definitely come in handy. Who doesn't like free money 😁

How to land your dream job as a Nigerian freelancer (some may even sponsor your relocation).

I won't call this a secret or an expo, it's what you can find by a simple Google search. We will be using LinkedIn to look for business owners, companies and establishments who need
remote workers. Some of these people need immediate hire(s), some need freelancers for a long-term project.

During the Writing Workshop with @ToyosiGodwin, I talked about why you need to have an irrestitible LinkedIn profile. We will be using our LinkedIn profile as a resume
here. When you are applying for most of these jobs, LinkedIn will automatically download your profile, save it as PDF, and send it to the recruiter. So, I assume anyone using this method either has a good LinkedIn profile or professional freelancer resume. Read more about

#Fire (#Agni) is the mouth,

#Vishvamitra is the #Rishi and #Gayatri is the metre.

Gayatri Mantra is recited during the investiture of sacred thread, practice of #Pranayama and #Japa, etc. (1/15)

Sandhya and Gayatri are identical.

He who meditates on Gayatri,

3-A man can repeat the Gayatri Mantra mentally, in all states, even while lying, sitting, walking, etc.

There is no sin of commission or omission of any sort in its repetition.

Took the time to watch in it's entirety, the BP debate on the situation of Nigeria, and as much as I'm impressed by the desire of foreign powers to impress upon us and our leadership, the importance of mining and deploying our vast human capital & natural resources...
There's a quiet, yet valid fear of subtle colonial tendency.

It's a dilemma we as a people have put ourselves in. A country of over 60 years shouldn't be needing the parliament of its historical colonial lords to debate it's potential or even the ineptitude of its government
...afterall, there is a belief that a person of that length of years should be a model to younger individuals or institutions

The concerns raised by Theresa Villiers and her colleagues is not totally out of place, particularly in this age, where your length of years...

1-To define God is to deny #God.

You can give the definition to a finite object.

How can you define limitless or the #Infinite Being

..who is the source and ultimate cause for everything? (1/15)

2-If you define God you are limiting the limitless one, you are confining Him with concepts of mind.

God is beyond the reach of the gross mind,

..but He can be #realized through #Japa and #meditation

..with a pure, subtle and one-pointed mind. (2/15)

Arjuna thought that Bhima was not doing any kind of worship.

He was proud of his external worship of Lord #Shiva.

He offered plenty of Bilva leaves. (3/15)

You will realize the spiritual benefits. (1/13)

What has Nigeria done for me? RT

A funny question I always hear from people especially #Mentees. Today, let me clarify somethings setting myself as an example.
@ritapurity @MomentsWithBren @FclNetwork @Oludeewon @arawu_samuel @arawu_samuel @KennyOnwukamike @AcademicChatter
1. Nigeria gave me the cheapest education I have accessed at the tertiary level.
I can only imagine being in the same class with people who attended prime institutions whose tuition for a year can pay the tuition of 10-20 kids like me in Nigeria.
We all had similar chances,
what did you do with yours? While I agree that the standards are different, did you accept the "School an Scam" gospel or work hard to make sure the struggle counts?

As for me, I made it count and had a 4.76 bachelors and a 5.0 Masters all from #FUTO. I am now global!!!

How to get an application fee waiver

As an African, you could be limited by exchange rates and many of your dream applications are not within reach.
The good news is that you could get a waiver. This thread will show you how.

@Oludeewon @drhammed @FclNetwork @AcademicChatter
1. Attend an open house event and ask for a Waiver.
There are tons of this that are usually available during the application season. A simple googling of "open house graduate admission events" will unlock a lot of such events. See below some upcoming ones… ImageImage
2. Connect with Graduate admissions team/division and ask for a waiver
When I was applying for gradschool,I got 3 waivers. If it was now, I would have had more. Simply draft an email stating why lack of funds will limit your chances of applying and send to the team. You'll testify

Just sharing this so you can share with others that there are different ways to get application fee waiver.
