After having a series of gut symptoms:

+Gastric juice regurgitation,

+ Bloating,

+ Farting,

Simon (not his name) went to visit a Doctor in a public hospital.

Diagnosis made was Gastritis.

He was given Antiacids & antiulcer drugs.

#MenMonday
He swallowed the drugs religiously but after 1 month, the symptoms escalated.

+ Gastric juice regurgitation.

+ Bloating.

+ Farting.

But now, difficulty in passing stool become another concern.

So, he decided to go to a popular private hospital in Eldoret, Kenya.

#MenMonday
In that first class private hospital, he met a surgeon who listened to his story.

An examination of his anal area was done and a quick diagnosis of ANAL FISSURE was made.

Simon wondered why he had to go to the theatre so abruptly yet he was just fine.

#MenMonday
He was wheeled into the theatre,

General anaesthesia administered,

And procedure done - SPHINCTEROTOMY.

Sphincterotomy is the repair of an anal fissure by stretching the internal anal sphincter.

#MenMonday Image
After the procedure was done,

Simon was pulled into the recovery room.

The moment he got out of the anaesthetic stupor, he found himself being wheeled to the MRI unit.

He got confused and thought he was lost in a stupor.

Nurses looked appaled in grave silence.

#MenMonday
Simon by now wanted answers.

He was in pain. Deep pain.

The surgeon gathered courage and told him,

" I saw a swelling in your rectum and I think you have colon cancer"

Simon was shocked!!

"The MRI is important and also some rectal tissues for histopathology"

😳

#MenMonday
Simon gave in.

"He is the Surgeon, I am not," he convinced his conscience.

The MRI was taken and the results truly showed a swelling but without cancerous characteristics.

The Dr. insisted it was a tumor. If not malignant, then benign.

#MenMonday
So another date was set for review of the 'tumor'.

Simon was discharged. No treatment on discharge.

He took a sick leave from his work - a leading state corporation that is always in the news.

But after three weeks.

There was disaster!! His anus was swollen with abscesses
Things started going south,

He couldn't sit or sleep!

His world was shutting down.

This is it,

Graphic:

Simon went back to the surgeon,

- the surgeon now shifted his diagnosis from a tumour in the colon to a FISTULA.

and ordered an immediate theatre admission for fistula repair.

So, they went in.

- and there was no fistula! No tumor!

Just an abscess and pus.

#MenMonday
Simon cried.

It was the most painful ordeal.

After 2 days he was discharged.

3rd generation cephalosporins (higher antibiotics) prescribed.

2 weeks later, little sign of proper healing.

Pain, pain and more pain.

#MenMonday Image
Simon went back,

Surgeon recommends another surgery, - debridement and toileting on the wounds and 'fistula repair'.

Simon said NO.

He set another voyage to another surgeon in Eldoret, Kenya.

New surgeon got shocked and disturbed at Simon's story.

#MenMonday
New surgeon then recommends TB, HIV tests and wound debridement,

Simon agreed because he had no choice.

TB and HIV: negative,

True to it, he starts healing.

BUT,

The wounds bursts again and get worse.

#MenMonday Image
Three surgeries in three months is what you cannot wish against your enemy.

Simon's medical cards are now exhausted. Now funding from his pocket.

He goes back to the hospital and the surgeon flew out of the country.

So, he shops for another.

#MenMonday
Simons lands in Nairobi,

Checks into a high-end hospital.

Surgeons listen, examine & conclude Simon has a fistula.

He has no option because he is in pain, passing stool is painful, the wounds are discharging pus.

Surgeons go in and there is no fistula, no benign masses.
Nairobi high-end hospital dresses the wound, prescribes antibiotics.

True to its word, the wound begins healing.

1 month later, the wounds burst again. More pus. More pus. Painful defecation.

He sets another voyage. This time to Kisumu.

#MenMonday Image
In Kisumu,

They request for a culture and sensitivity test.

All antibiotics report RESISTANCE including sulbactam except gentamycin.

He is then put on daily gentamycin.

He was initially on sulbactam each injection is 5K.

#MenMonday
The Kisumu Doctor then told him these:

- Lose weight.

- Eat right.

- Sit on warm salt water.

Honestly the first two instructions are what the FIRST ELDORET SURGEON should have prescribed instead of a surgery.

#MenMonday
The Kisumu Doctor referred him to me and gave me consent to share this story.

Simon is still battling

- Bloating

- Gastric juice regurgitation

- Endless gassing and tenesmus.

Now add deep wounds and pain in passing stool.

The first symptoms havent gone.

#MenMonday
The wounds are now healing,

But,

This is the point.

Gut conditions resulting from food should first be treated with food not pills, not the surgeon's knife.

+ Gastritis

+ Irritable bowel syndrome

+ Haemorrhoids

#MenMonday Image
Whenever you have a gut problem,

Don't rush to swallow pills,

First:

- Do Intermittent Fasting for at least 8 months.

- Stay away from wheat, sugar and grains.

- Eat more proteins.

- Lift weights and walk in the sun.

#MenMonday
End of Simon's story.

About Othuol.

I'll be BLUNT:

Same guys attacking artists for 'abandoning' Othuol, are the same guys who abandon their parents and siblings.

Artists brought Othuol to us, nurtured him, paid his bills and will give him a beffiting send off.

Othuol messed himself up.
Othuol was diagnosed with Pulmonary TB.

He failed to adhere to treatment and got a relapse. - An extra-pulmonary TB.

He then slid into alcoholism, - and we all know that alcohol and TB drugs is a lethal combination.

Then organ failure.

All this time, artists paid his bills.
Othuol was in denial.

He refused to accept that you can be a celebrity and be broke.

- You can be a celebrity but still get a chronic illness like TB.

Nothing wrong here. We are human beings not immortals.

He refused to accept his demons.- They devoured him to death.
