Alice Springs has a great Town Councillor, an Indigenous Australian woman, who works hard to represent all of her constituents and has a record of speaking and acting on behalf of the local Aboriginal community. She was just nominated for Deputy Mayor! And lost to Jacinta Price.
Catherine Satour is her name and unlike Price she puts in the work and takes the position seriously. But council works as a partisan block without apparent consideration of merit or commitment, so Price got the numbers. #ntpolalicespringsnews.com.au/2020/09/30/vot…
I’m consistently amazed at how little scrutiny there is of Jacinta Price in our local media. The Alice Springs News, for all its faults, is the only publication willing to even partially hold her feet to the fire. Even then there is a serious lack of scrutiny.
Jacinta Price is an extremist. Plain and simple. She has courted Australian alt-right, neo-nazi figures, nodding along to white nationalist propaganda and dog whistling to white racists in the national media.
She claims to be a campaigner against domestic violence but doesn’t actually work with, and consistently denigrates any actual organisations on the ground working towards these goals. At the same time, she shares content from actual domestic abusers who share her agenda.
She has also skirted with climate denial, raising questions about the accuracy of the historical climate record in a council meeting based on emails she got from a constituent. This is part of a conspiracy theory implying the doctoring of climate records for nefarious purposes.
This should be no surprise based on what she does for a ‘Job’: the ‘Director of Indigenous Research’ at the Centre for Independent Studies, a right wing think tank. Yet the CIS has published no actual research, only an 11 page PDF Brochure called “Changing the Narrative”.
This was the CIS’s first publication in 20 years. Their ‘latest publications’ are this from 2019, then two other publications from 1999 and 1993. So not a lot of research going on there.
So who funds the CIS? They keep their donors secret, but we do know of some confirmed donors from a few years ago. It’s a who’s who of fossil fuel companies and right wing media moguls.
Her real job, it seems, is being paid by corporate fossil fuel interests to stoke the right wing culture war in the Murdoch media and provide cover and an air of legitimacy for aggrieved white racists.
This is why she never mentions her ‘work’ on Town Council. Because it was only ever a platform from which to launch a Murdoch media career. She doesn’t DO the work. Meanwhile an actual superstar Indigenous woman puts in the work and goes unrecognised.
