.@GovRonDeSantis asked Dr. Bhattacharya about Fauci’s statements on masks, referring to a March interview in which Fauci said masks may make you feel protected, but people touch their faces and possibly increase infections.

DeSantis: “All scientists were pretty much saying that. Now many say [it's] basically [a] mark of a good person, are you wearing it or not. It doesn’t seem like the underlying evidence has changed very much…

"what is the average person [supposed to think] when they were literally tweeting at you ‘Don’t wear a mask,’ and [I don’t think] the explanation that we want to save them for healthcare workers… really flies because healthcare workers aren’t wearing cloth masks…

"So something changed between March and probably about May or June; it doesn’t seem like there were any new RCT studies that had come out, though.”
Dr. Bhattacharya: “I agree; I haven’t seen a ton of evidence that suggests that…

"I would have expected to see a lot more study about the kinds of masks people actually wear, and I haven’t really seen that… It would be a really good idea because that’s something the public health community is saying we should do to keep ourselves safe...
5/10
"or keep others safe… Checking to see if the kinds of masks people actually use, not the kinds that we prescribe them to use, do they actually work? I don’t think I’ve seen any studies that suggest that the typical mask that people use,...

"that they use and re-use, often without washing them or whatnot, are those effective? I think people like masks because intuitively you think, ‘I am giving droplets out to you that might have the virus, and so it’s got to provide some protection.’...
7/10
"Intuitively, it might, but as a scientific matter, it’s still an open question whether they do or not. Often in science, we end up with results that are not intuitive; we’re surprised by the experimental results. I think this may be one area where…

"you can probably hear my reticence to weigh in because I don’t know of a ton of studies that definitely say one way or the other on this, and that’s actually a problem. I think there ought to be more if we’re going to create this into this talisman...

"that we have to wear in order to be a good person.”
People arrested at the @UF protest this evening (this thread will be updated as they're booked into the jail):
1. Keely Nicole Gliwa, 23
Charges: Failure to obey a police officer, resisting an officer without violence, wearing a hood or mask on public property
That third charge is Florida Statute 876.13: Wearing mask, hood, or other device on public property.—No person or persons shall in this state, while wearing any mask, hood, or device whereby any portion of the face is so hidden, concealed, or covered as to conceal the identity of the wearer, enter upon, or be, or appear upon or within the public property of any municipality or county of the state.
2. Roseanna Yashoda Bisram, 20
Charges: Failure to obey a police officer, resisting an officer without violence, wearing a hood or mask on public property
On December 6, Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo sent a letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), asking questions about a recent preprint documenting the detection of billions of DNA fragments per dose in the approved Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 mRNA vaccines
/1
The risks of these contaminants could include the integration of these DNA fragments with human DNA, changes to our genes that could be passed down to offspring, and the development of cancer because the genes within a cell control whether the cell is healthy or cancerous.

After our questions led to the removal of anti-police banners on a UF bldg, rocks were thrown through the windows, and the artists wrote "F*** off Fascists" on plywood beside a disclaimer from the university that said it was "artists' speech"
A UF professor posted a letter stating that it was "largely a typographic problem" because the signs identifying the banners as "artists' speech" could not be read by passing drivers. UF was also concerned that the banners were not installed safely.
1/ On Thursday, the Florida Joint Legislative Auditing Committee told the City of Gainesville that they need to make BIG changes to their budget or face removal from office.
The city commission has scheduled an emergency meeting for tomorrow.
2/ In preparation for that meeting, we have published 3 opinion pieces from people who have unsuccessfully tried to give the city commission advice over the past decade or so.
The first is from the former General Manager of the City's municipal utility
3/ The second is from the former City Auditor, who was fired after he found irregularities in a City program and was instrumental in launching the JLAC audit.
An "insider" report details the many ways in which DEI is embedded into every department at the University of Florida alachuachronicle.com/insider-report…
A report on DEI and CRT initiatives at the University of Florida provided to Alachua Chronicle by a UF “insider” describes a number of programs and positions, many of which were not reported by the university in response to a request from the governor
UF has 25 faculty or staff with official DEI titles, with salaries totaling more than $3 million. A majority of these were hired in the 2021-22 academic year. Two DEI staff members make over $300k, one makes over $200k, and 6 make over $150k.
UF Chemistry DEI puts out "Black Friday" newsletters on Fridays during Black History Month.
"Black History Month is a time to to both honor those Black scientists and role models that paved the way for today’s individuals and as a time to examine how we can bring anti-racism and racial justice to our communities."
There is info about a College of Liberal Arts & Sciences event that "will examine the relationship between Afro-Latinx identity and the #BlackLivesMatter movement via social media."
