Here's a good piece by @izzieramirez@vicenews highlighting environmental justice! Thank you for including UCS. We wanted to take this opportunity to clarify UCS is not primarily an environmental justice org & why it's important to uplift orgs that are. vice.com/en/article/jgx…
Grassroots environmental justice groups often have to struggle for funding and attention, even as they’re representing the communities most overburdened by environmental issues. It’s important these groups get the credit.
While we’re honored to contribute to the fight for environmental justice, we wanted to take this moment to shine a light on some additional organizations that are doing the critical, community-focused work of environmental justice.
The National Black Environmental Justice Network - @nbejn1 - has been fighting for justice for more than two decades and has developed a powerful policy platform to lift up communities of color: nbejn.com
The Environmental Justice Health Alliance - @StopToxics - is a network of diverse grassroots groups across the country focusing on challenging the dangerous impacts of the chemical industry on communities: ej4all.org
Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services, T.E.J.A.S. - @tejasbarrios - is dedicated to creating sustainable, environmentally healthy communities w/ the guiding principle that everyone, regardless of race or income, is entitled to a clean environment: tejasbarrios.org
RISE St. James is a community organization in Louisiana fighting for community, children, and health. Currently they’re fighting against a proposed plastic factory in “cancer alley”: stopformosa.org
Clean Power Lake County - @CleanPowerLC - is an Illinois community-driven coalition committed to local action to secure environmental, economic & racial justice. It is supported by several partners, including environmental, faith & public health orgs: cleanpowerlakecounty.org
Clean Air Now Coalition – @MoKanCAN –is dedicated to improving air quality in Kansas City and the surrounding region, particularly in communities suffering the greatest health burden, and to preventing and mitigating disease caused by air pollution: cankc.org/about-us/
California Environmental Justice Alliance - @cejapower - builds power of communities across California to create policies that will alleviate poverty and pollution, growing the statewide movement for environmental health and social justice: caleja.org
Community In-Power and Development Association Inc, CIDA Inc, located in Texas, fights for the fundamental right to breathe clean, unpolluted air, particularly communities affected by industry pollution: cidainc.org
Kingdom Living Temple - @KingdomLiving4u – is a Christian church supporting the writing of the South Carolina State Energy Plan, fighting a biomass pelletizing plant, and organizing around water issues, among other campaigns: newalphacdc.com/kingdom-living…
The Harambee House, Inc / Citizens for Environmental Justice - @CFEJSAV – is a Savannah based organization helping people create safe, clean, healthy and sustainable communities that promote wellness, prosperity and environmental justice: theharambeehouse.net
The Imani Group, Inc works in Georgia and South Carolina to address Environmental Justice issues at local chemical, nuclear, and industrial sites within vulnerable communities: theimanigroup.org
Tallahassee Food Network connects folks across neighborhood, income, race, and gender to build relationships and foster partnerships in order to grow community-based food systems that ensure healthy, green, fair, and affordable food access: facebook.com/TallahasseeFoo…
West End Revitalization Association, Inc works to improve the quality of life for low-income and minority residents through environmental protection, preservation, stabilization, and planned development in North Carolina’s Alamance and Orange Counties: wera-nc.org
This isn’t an exhaustive list of environmental justice organizations, but these groups are doing important community-based work across the country and deserve your support!

Congress must act quickly to reach a #DebtCeiling agreement and avoid a catastrophic default, which would harm the economy and disproportionately hurt low-income households. No #DefaultOnAmerica
The #DebtCeiling deal announced over the weekend shows some progress BUT contains some very damaging provisions that would harm public health and well-being and the environment, especially in frontline communities and communities of color.

➡️docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/…
Congress should reject the egregious provision to move forward the Mountain Valley Pipeline, a project that would expand climate-damaging methane gas, pollute the local environment, and eliminate important legal protections for communities' health. #StopMVP

We're wrapping up National Farmworkers Awareness Week with a thread! Farmworkers make our food system run. But they shoulder a lot of risk. Daily life is full of dangers for the estimated 2.4 million farmworkers in the US, most of whom are Hispanic and Indigenous. #NFAW2023
Working outdoors is hard, dangerous work: Farmworkers die of heat-related causes at a rate 20 times greater than other professions. In hot agricultural centers like California's Central Valley, that number is even higher. act.ucsusa.org/3wju1lg
Rising temperatures increases the risk of another ever-present danger: pesticides that threaten farmworker health. act.ucsusa.org/3FobLeL

The public health implications of overturning #RoeVsWade are clear: it means pregnant people will needlessly suffer. act.ucsusa.org/3ndb6mk
The policy decisions following this ruling that restrict reproductive health will ignore what the best available science tells us about how to best protect people.
Everyone should have access to healthcare. Everyone should be able to access approved medical procedures, drugs, and other services. Denying or restricting people of these services only endangers people’s lives.

Yesterday we talked about the threat the events of Jan. 6 posed to our democracy. But #Jan6 also highlighted a threat to our entire planet. Why? Outdated and dangerous policies give @POTUS sole authority to launch a nuclear strike & no one can stop it once issued. (🧵) –
Two days after the capitol riot, concerns about then-president Trump led House Speaker Pelosi to ask the head of the US military, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, about "preventing an unstable president from...ordering a nuclear strike. politico.com/news/2021/01/0…
Unknown to Pelosi, Gen. Milley was already trying to step in, taking extraordinary measures to insert himself in the nuclear chain of command, even though he has no role and his actions might have been completely ineffective. washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/…
