Saddened to hear that @ChicagoReporter is in jeopardy. A pioneer in both racial justice and data reporting, it has illuminated inequity for decades and been an important training ground for journalists, myself included. I hope @CRSchicago will reconsider. #SaveTheChicagoReporter
As a (23-yo) intern at the @ChicagoReporter I surveyed every public health clinic and hospital in Chicago—and visited several—to find out what kind of breastfeeding support/education new moms were given. tl;dr the pharma/formula companies helped create huge disparities.
that dynamic is pretty well understood now. But not back in 1993. Can't remember how I came up with the idea, but my editors were so supportive and I learned so much. A few years later I expanded (and co-located) that reporting into a cover story for @wcp (also in jeopardy, sigh)
So that's just one story, one intern. But the work that @ChicagoReporter has done over the years has been invaluable to the city, and to data/investigative journalism more broadly.
And while I'm glad that billionaires stepped in to save @washingtonpost@TheAtlantic@latimes...imagine if such people saved innovative local reporting like @ChicagoReporter and @wcp that launch generations of great reporters.
