Periodic reminder that when I say we should "start with compassion," when we get into organizing conflicts w folks who share our values, it's not some Pollyanna bullshit. It's just good organizing. Also, resolving shit by trying to invoke authority comes at a cost, now or later.
You don't have to work w everyone, but pls don't throw relationships away carelessly. A lot of things that seem important in the moment will seem less so later, and starting with compassion can sometimes prevent a conflict from creating emotional landmines you might step on later
I have made these mistakes. Most organizers have. It's something to work toward minimizing.
I'm a petty enough person that I sometimes regret being nice about things I wanted to snap at someone about (yep, that petty), but those regrets are minor in comparison to regrets about conflicts that cost me relationships that didn't have to burn over a passing conflict.
Organizing is not the work of winning arguments. We all need to remember that.

Someone replied to something I wrote expressing frustration w folks being shamed for "having compassion" for Trump. Can we understand the difference between "feeling" & what you subject other ppl to? When you wish him a speedy recovery, you're basically wishing for more genocide.
So, at minimum, a lot of people are going to roll their eyes at that shit. Others will be more vocal. Think about it. If someone was open about their plans to cage & kill you, & they got real sick, and I was like "I, for one, hope they get better right away," how would that land?
If I said that, what would you think of my regard for your freedom and survival?

TODAY is the beginning of the National Week of Mourning for people we have lost to COVID-19, and of our Signs, Shrines, Collages and a Mixtape: A Remote COVID Vigil event, which runs all week. We are collaging, creating shrines, hanging banners and more. facebook.com/events/8206524…
You may notice banners like the one pictured above popping up around Chicago. These are not "banner drops," but rather, an effort to create spaces where people can honor their grief in a shared way, even if they are viewing the banner at different times. #WeGrieveTogether
.@anarchocatfan and I put up this one this morning. If you are in the Rogers Park/Edgewater area, you can find this banner at Schreiber Park, if you would like to take a moment there, or leave a flower or candle. I don't know how long it will be up bc we did not get permission.

If he appears to recover easily, you might be surprised how well his BS about risking it to show people we shouldn't be afraid spiel might land with some people.
At least for a while.
People want to hear that miraculous treatments are close at hand. People are tired. The holidays are coming. People want to believe that they can be less afraid now.

I'm not convinced he's gonna die or anything, but I think the best medicine in the world can prob prop a lot of ppl up for four minutes. Also, when I was sick last spring, I got better and worse in very deceptive intervals. I'd keep thinking I was recovering & then get way worse.
I thought I had a mild case, but after a few days, suddenly my chest felt like it was on fire. Then, moving from the bed to the couch started to feel not only difficult, but also genuinely injurious. Then one of my lungs more or less stopped working.
I would feel less inflamed sometimes, and breathe a bit better. It felt like progress. Then I started waking up at 3 and 4am gasping. I was afraid to go back to sleep, not just bc I was afraid of dying, but bc waking up that way was utterly horrifying. My left lung felt like tar.

There needs to be great scrutiny of this. How many everyday people do they get to take out so they can have their little meetings about their coup? They know what they are doing. They think of their drivers, delivery people and housekeepers as collateral damage.
There will no be no unity with folks who are still creating new chains of infection so they can carry out their fascist plan to overthrow the government.
We cannot lose the plot for even one moment here. The stakes are too high.

I convinced a group of strangers to put on masks today. If an asshole like me can get through one of these exchanges productively, some of y'all can too.
I think it's worth noting that we tend to think of mask wearing along ideological lines & assume people are adamant. These people had masks, they were just being lazy and reckless. But upon being asked, they did the right thing. I did not expect that. This is worth remembering.
I did not have any spare masks with me, but I was giving away face shields today, so I was going to offer those at least, if they didn't have masks. But they all had one, and upon being asked, they hurriedly put them on. I think they were embarrassed. I am glad I asked.
