After 5 years, a court in Athens will deliver its verdict against #GoldenDawn trial suspects, for their role in the murders of Pavlos Fyssas and Shehzad Luqman, and numerous brutal attacks against migrants & refugees.

I'm available for comment.

Proud to know that @hrw 2012 report “Hate on the Streets: Xenophobic Violence in Greece” documenting how gangs of Greeks regularly attacked migrants and asylum seekers across #Greece contributed to the fight against #GoldenDawn and to this trial.

For our 2012 report on racist violence in #Greece, my colleague @sunderland_jude and I met with the leader of #GoldenDawn - here’s what he said to us. ImageImage
When #GoldenDawn flourished (2010-2013) migrants described widespread fear of walking on the streets. Attacks took place at night near town squares & attackers worked in groups & were often dressed in dark with their faces obscured by cloth or helmets.

This is what I called in my 2012 @nytimes OpEd #Greece’s Epidemic or Racist Attacks.

#Greece’s epidemic of racist attacks in 2010-2013 was met for far too long with impunity. Police and judges systematically failed to record such attacks & arrest and prosecute the perpetrators leaving the space for unchecked violence to develop.

Together with 28 other groups, @hrw calls in an open letter to Greek MPs for an inquiry into abuses at borders.

Parliament should examine whether border abuses are part of a de facto government policy at odds with international, European, and Greek law.

hrw.org/news/2020/10/0…
In the letter, groups have attached a long list of reports documenting the pattern of abuse at borders by Greek law enforcement officers or unidentified masked men, who appear to be working in tandem with border enforcement officials.
