A lot of people are going to send out bad tweets about this. Don’t be one of them. There’s far too little accountability for crimes committed against people in jail. huffpost.com/entry/baby-sha…
This isn’t a “bad apples” story. You had two 21-year-old corrections officers torturing inmates and a 50-year-old supervisor who did nothing about it. Points to a broken culture and major systemic issues. oklahoman.com/article/567324…
"The inmates was forced to stand the entire time, hands cuffed behind them and secured to the wall… Some inmates were in the room as long as two hours.” oklahoman.com/article/567324…
Four years ago this week, we published video of the cruel treatment of 35-year-old father Michael Sabbie. Guards tossed into a jail cell and left him to die. Michael begged — BEGGED — for help. They ignored his pain. His four kids will never see him again. huffpost.com/entry/michael-…

NEW: A Trump ally blocked a vote on the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act of 2020, citing DOJ’s objections. DOJ told us they have “technical concerns,” but wouldn’t elaborate on what they are. It’s raising a lot of questions. Story with @letsgomathias: huffpost.com/entry/domestic…
Former top DOJ national security official Mary McCord would like to see an actual domestic terrorism criminal statute, but doesn’t think this bill would “seriously impedes” DOJ’s current domestic terrorism work, as Sen. Ron Johnson claimed. huffpost.com/entry/domestic…
DOJ: “We appreciate Senator Johnson’s willingness to step in and object and relay those concerns. That being said, we always welcome Congress’s interest in our fight against domestic terrorism.” huffpost.com/entry/domestic…

NEW: A Virginia judge rejected an attempt by the Portsmouth Police Department to push the city’s elected prosecutor off of questionable felony cases they brought in connection with the destruction of a Confederate monument. huffpost.com/entry/portsmou…
Stephanie Morales, Portsmouth’s elected prosector, will now be able to handle the cases "in the normal course,” and evaluate any First Amendment concerns. huffpost.com/entry/portsmou…
As I reported last week, Portsmouth’s suspended police chief has now aligned herself with political opponents of Sen. Louise Lucas. huffpost.com/entry/portsmou…

BREAKING: Federal judge halts Trump’s law enforcement commission, which was set to issue a report just ahead of the presidential election. huffpost.com/entry/trump-la…
“Especially in 2020… one may legitimately question whether it is sound policy to have a group with little diversity of experience examine, behind closed doors, the sensitive issues facing law enforcement and the criminal justice system in America today.” huffpost.com/entry/trump-la…
DOJ is on a REALLY tight timeline here if they want to appeal and get this out before the election, but if they say they want to get this out before the election it sort of gives away the game. huffpost.com/entry/trump-la…

One of the Trump fans / terrorists convicted in a plot to slaughter Muslim refugees in Kansas told an undercover FBI agent he wanted to pause their murderous plot because he was "scared that it would give a lot of ammunition to Hillary supporters." huffpost.com/entry/kansas-t…
"My thoughts are that it will not be until right after the election. That obstacle will be out-of-the-way at that point," the anti-Muslim terrorist / Trump fanatic wrote in a 2016 text. huffpost.com/entry/kansas-t…

In case you missed it: my look at how two of the statutes that DOJ is currently using against protesters came about: huffpost.com/entry/anti-rio…
TL;DR: Strom Thurmond and co. wanted to go after Stokely Carmichael and H. Rap Brown. huffpost.com/entry/anti-rio…
It took more than half a century for federal courts to seriously evaluate the First Amendment issues in the anti-rioting act… and only after the act was applied to white supremacists (and not the Black activists that Strom Thurmond wanted to target). huffpost.com/entry/anti-rio… Image

NEW: The Trump administration is deploying a couple of rarely-used federal statutes from 1968 in their 2020 campaign against rioters.

Those statutes were intended to target Black activists. And Strom Thurmond played a key role in getting them passed.

huffpost.com/entry/anti-rio…
AG Barr recently said prosecutors shouldn’t be “headhunters” who search statute books to find “some esoteric crime” to take down targets.

DOJ previously called one of the statutes they’re using against protesters “obscure” and "seldom-used.”

huffpost.com/entry/anti-rio…
2020 or 1968? “It seems a little unusual that some of those who are usually so interested in the preservation of states’ rights, and in so many instances, rightfully so, are so quick to abdicate the police power of the states in this particular situation.” huffpost.com/entry/anti-rio…
