Can we have a conversation (i.e., a thread) about Trump's tweet falsely claiming that Democrats want to "shut your churches down, permanently"? 1/x
This false claim--that Democrats are anti-religion, and in particular, anti-Christian--has been baked into the Christian right ideology for decades.

Trump has just weaponized it in new ways. 2/x
The pandemic is another weapon for them in their arsenal to attack Democrats as anti-Christian. There are dozens of lawsuits across the country (some joined by DOJ, led by Barr, who has made clear his antipathy to what he calls "militant secularists." 3/x
Even the Supreme Court has upheld COVID restrictions, finding they do not target churches and apply to gatherings based on size, indoors, etc. and therefore are not unconstitutional. 4/x
John Roberts sided with the court's liberals in those cases, which were 5-4.

Now it would be 4-4.

With Barrett?

5/x
Back to Trump. He is using this false claim that Democrats are bent on shutting down *"your"* churches (i.e., his base's churches) in particular.

It's a lie.

But he is constantly positioning himself as the base's strongman savior. 6/x
He also knows that many in the base are willing to have indoor church, are angry that they can't, or only can with restrictions. He wants to project not only that he is defeating COVID (even if he isn't) but simultaneously being their most ardent defender. 7/x
Barrett is key to this strategy.

McConnell is playing along, accusing Barrett critics of attacking her faith, something he claims is a "disgrace."

8/x
This strategy--accusing Dems of being "anti-Christian" or "anti-Catholic"--is not new with Barrett. There's a very long history, which I detailed here: 9/x

thenation.com/article/archiv…
It's not just with judicial nominations, though. The false claim that Democrats are anti-Christian runs so deep and long in Christian nationalist mythology that Trump did not have to create new arguments; he just had to present himself as the savior from this supposed evil. 10/x
See UNHOLY, p. 29 11/x
All the chaos? It’s part of God’s plan.

UNHOLY, p. 31 12/x
Trump’s success is “supernatural.”

UNHOLY, pp. 66-67. 13/x
So you see just this week his son Eric claiming that Trump "literally saved Christianity." 14/x

Which of course is ludicrous and comical but also--you must understand--a further signal to the base that he will do whatever it takes to protect what they conceive of as their religious freedom rights in the face of secularism. 15/x
So that is through Bill Barr, through judicial nominations, through federal agency actions, regulations, executive orders and, sure, even pretense.

Like the pretense that Trump is well and strong, like any believer in the prosperity gospel would believe. 16/x
That he has God's hand/blessing/anointing. That believers and those blessed by God will have wealth and health. That he can speak things--including his health--into existence. 17/x
Their false claims that Democrats are anti-Christian, and all the actions that flow from those false claims, are a threat to our democracy.

Please read UNHOLY.

I'm still amazed the "Putin told me" story doesn't seem to be setting off more alarms. Have we just come to expect, shrug, that Trump reportedly admitted this?

But see also, from the same piece. washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
That's right, not only has Trump reportedly admitted that Putin told him the conspiracy theory that Ukraine meddled in '16, not Russia, contrary to conclusions of US intelligence, which Trump refuses to believe.
On top of that, US intelligence knows Russian propagandists are ongoing with their effort to spread this disinformation among the American public, and are *celebrating* the traction it has gotten with conservative organizations--which are, presumably, supporting Trump's reelex.

THREAD:

1. Let's have some real talk about the CT editorial.

I understand the site has crashed.

But it doesn't mean Trump's evangelical support has imploded. AT ALL.
2. I've spent the better part of the last four years reporting on Trump's evangelical support--and why Trump's white evangelical supporters won out over the never Trumpers.

The result: a book, which you will be able to read next year.

penguinrandomhouse.com/books/605774/u…
3. In the meantime, just today, with @typeinvestigate and @HuffPost, we published this piece about why white evangelicals remain a crucial base of support and defense for Trump in the face of impeachment.

Christianity Today editorial calling for Trump's removal: "To the many evangelicals who continue to support Mr. Trump in spite of his blackened moral record, we might say this: Remember who you are and whom you serve." christianitytoday.com/ct/2019/decemb… via @CTMagazine
"Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trump’s immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency."

christianitytoday.com/ct/2019/decemb…
And then consider the overwhelming number of white evangelicals who support Trump, oppose impeachment, and have built a massive network in order to shield him from accountability and get him reelected:

Did you read this excellent reporting from @gregpmiller et al.? Let's talk about it.

Putin and Hungary’s Orban helped sour Trump on Ukraine washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
@gregpmiller Thread:

They report that Putin and Hungary's Viktor Orban helped turn Trump against Ukraine. Not the specific ant-Biden conspiracy theories later hatched, but just in general. /1
@gregpmiller They further report that Putin/Orban "efforts to poison Trump’s views toward Zelensky...took on added significance this year because of the departure or declining influence of those who had sought to blunt the influence of Putin and other authoritarian leaders over Trump." /2

1. I just watched the video of Giuliani from last night.

talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/here-we…

Beyond the obvious madness (or not madness? more on that below) there's a strategy worth paying attention to.
2. Giuliani is hinting, or possibly saying aloud, hard to tell amid all the yelling, something that underlies other defenses of Trump with regard to the intelligence whistleblower: that Trump was just conducting normal foreign policy, and he's allowed to because he's POTUS.
3. Giuliani says it at one point with Cuomo: that it's ok for US government to withhold aid from a country if it's not living up to rule of law, civil society, democratic norms. He says it's well within Trump's lane to push Ukraine to fight corruption.

1. Trump and Jews. A thread.

"Trump is frustrated" that more Jews won't vote for him is what an unnamed former/current WH official or a Trump advisor tells a reporter. It's not the real reason why Trump is acting this way.

washingtonpost.com/politics/trump…
2. Trump wants to divide people. This is not about Trump being "transactional" (i.e., hoping move of US Embassy to Jerusalem will make more American Jews love him in exchange). It's about Trump wanting to divide the "disloyal" from the "loyal," to pit people against each other.
3. Who is loyal? Well, a minority of American Jews for whom actions like the embassy move and Trump's tightness with Bibi are a plus, or at least sufficient to overcome Trump's negatives. And the evangelicals, Trump's most dedicated voting bloc.
