He orders his staff and others to take the strictest precautions to protect themselves & others. He sends a message to the country:...
"We can make it, but I realize that we are all in this together. As a result, my first act will be to endorse another stimulus package that will help keep tens of millions of my fellow Americans afloat."
Okay, this doesn’t work, because he’s Donald Trump. The imagined speech would have been good politics, but it would require empathy, a willingness to admit vulnerability, and probably require an apology for his callous indifference. So… impossible.

1. Featured speaker at Waukesha GOP women’s event: Alt right icon Michelle Malkin.
2.Standing ovation for mother of Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17 year old who shot and killed two people in Kenosha
To be clear about this. At event sponsored by the Waukesha GOP in Wisconsin, the mother of the 17-year-old boy who took a rifle across state lines to Kenosha, and shot three people, killing two… Received a standing ovation. Led by one of the right’s most notorious racists.
(2) But next time, you might want to visit some other Wisconsin suburbs, which have a very different story to tell. Perhaps you might consider visiting Bayside, Elm Grove, Whitefish Bay, Wauwatosa, or even my hometown of Mequon. Via @WisVoter ...
(3) "In Bayside, Obama won by 11 points, but Clinton won by 34.
"In Elm Grove, Romney won by 36 but Trump by 13. In Mequon Romney won by 31 points and Trump by 11. River Hills, Wisconsin’s wealthiest place, voted Democratic for the first time in at least 90 years.
I didn't take Trump's chances there seriously. And as Minnesota went, so went Wisconsin. There was one poll around Labor Day that showed Trump tied in Minnesota, but the real Clear Politics average showed Biden up 3.7%.
Future me: So what happened there? 2/7
Me: The same thing that happened in WI and MI. Trump managed to pull off small wins by running up the score in rural areas. It turns out that he did have hidden voters -- white working class supporters who didn't vote in 2016 but came out in 2020. 3/7
Working on a piece about conventions, I found this picture from 1968.
The man in the middle is my father, Jay. He and Senator Eugene McCarthy are watching Bobby Kennedy announce that he was finally getting into the presidential race against LBJ. They are in Green Bay, WI.
The back story: throughout 1967, anti-war Dems had begged Bobby to challenge LBJ, but Kennedy refused. So McCarthy decided to pick up the banner instead, running a quixotic campaign against a sitting president. My father was his Wisconsin campaign director
After McCarthy surged in New Hampshire and was poised to win the WI primary, Bobby decided that maybe Johnson was vulnerable after all, and decided to jump into the race. He hoped McCarthy would just step aside in his favor, but he didn't. And this is the moment it happened.
Why a diary/journal? Unlike histories that impose a coherence on events that didn’t exist, a daily chronicle reflects confusion, distractions, false starts, and self-delusions. It could be embarrassing, because if I’m wrong it goes on my permanent record (again).
I’ve been asking the same thing since 2017. Will historians be able to capture the pace of news, the toxicity of social media, the chaotic whirl of Trump-era politics, with its stew of shock, numbness, cowardice, alternative realities, and anger?
"Conservatives are going to need to articulate a real vision for the United States, and not just “stand athwart history yelling, ‘Stop!’” They are going to have to look past Reagan and abandon Trump. They need a new vision and a chance to articulate it." thebulwark.com/whats-left-to-…
"Precisely because their opponents in the current dialogue are utopian and fanatical, conservatives have plenty of room to become realistic, thoughtful, and prudent—as well as respectful of institutions, especially the Constitution."
"David French’s call for conservatives to become “Bill of Rights conservatives” instead of “law and order conservatives” is therefore extremely topical. "
