I spoke to a very upset elderly patient (more than 80 years old yesterday) who has hardly had any sleep the night before due to back pain and wanted to speak to a doctor. She was not online. I listened to her, suggested some painkillers and promised I would call her back today.
I asked her as I finished if she was online at all. She replied she wasn’t but she knew her son was. So I asked her if she would like to ask her son if he might get #recordsAccessAndUnderstanding for her. She said she would ask him and then inform me today #DigitalDivide
Today I called her back as promised and she immediately gave me her son’s telephone number eager for him to access her records. I just wanted to know how her back was and if meds I had given her had helped. (She has been waiting 6 months for epidural for lumbar stenosis)
She replied “Oh doctor, I had the best sleep in ages. Thankyou”. I thought it was the medication I had prescribed. She replied “oh no, doctor. I still have not got the medication”. No - you listened to me and that is what I wanted more than anything. Thankyou.
My legs are still burning but I feel so much better now that you have listened to me. She also wanted her son to keep an eye on her and gave me permission to give him access to her records too #RecordsAccessAndUnderstanding
I rang her son up who was expecting a phone call. “I have just got a brand new iPad and got my smartphone with me doc”. I went through the safety checklist questionnaire with him over the phone htmc.co.uk/GetAccessNow/ I also asked him to download @MJogLtd messenger too
He was on the system as “incapable of ordering his prescriptions and needing help from the pharmacist so they can order for him”. I could not understand why. So I talked him over the phone how to register for access to his records and then told him how he can now read mum’s too!
He was over the moon. Tomorrow I will call back and check Mum is OK and also that he can read what I have written in her notes so that they both know what is going on. I want her to be able to get her medications when needed over the winter period #COVID19 Both are high risk
