15 yrs ago, at 0920hrs on Oct 8th, it was a sort of rebirth, after me and my fellow officer were extricated quickly from the debris.
Buried in earthquake at Uri while sitting in field hospital’s MI room, I thought it to be a blast initially. But at 7.6 Richter scale, ground was..
Just not shaking, it was undulating. We hid beneath the sturdy table and that saved us.
Those thoughts can’t be penned down easily.
I was initially treated in an open ground for the injuries.
Main issue was difficult breathing due to lot of dust in mouth/nostrils.
I was given...
Oxygen.
There was a fog of dust all around.
And within few moments, we could see lot of civilians coming with injured and it was actually tough.
Col Budhiraja from 14 Rajput and Col Bhaduri of AMC led from the front on the ground.
I along with my other colleagues started ......
Treating the injured. In the evening, after we had received lot of medical reinforcements, I was asked to go with a contingent of 2 Sikh to help and treat civilians in the higher reaches, who could not come to base camp due to landslides.
We made a camp and stayed there....
I saw the worst of the damage there.
Troops helped the civilians in the best possible way. They ran a community kitchen and helped in rebuilding houses.
We did all this with numerous aftershocks adding to my acute PTSD.
2 Sikh had to leave for other rescue op but 14 Rajput.....
Joined us.There are many other small stories. How we carried a pregnant patient with femur fracture across those trails. We lost few men in landslide while searching for the untraceable too.
I finally went on AL in November to get married.
This event shaped my life and ideals
I have tried to write a synopsis.
May be can try writing in detail, once I am retired for good.
But yes, Uri was resurrected due to great combined efforts of everyone affected.
I was lucky to be among the survivors and the ones who rebounded.
No retreat No Surrender
The thread starts from this.
I think I have not been able to tie them up correctly.
