WRITING GRADUATE ADMISSION ESSAY USING THE “STAR” MODEL

So, you’re asked to write a 350word personal statement essay on “overcoming obstacles, community work, experience (s) that have shaped you, academic gap- low GPA/GRE scores- & how the degree will help your future goals” 1/n
“STAR” is an appropriate model one can employ in this scenario to set a good precedence for your write up and ensure you adequately answer all questions asked.
S- Situation
T- Task
A- Action
R- Result

Last week, I made a post on writing a concise SOP/ PS, if you missed it, please check here

Statement of Purpose & Personal Statement for graduate admission- A very concise explanation of the two & IMPORTANT TIPS TO NOTE.

Statement of Purpose (SOP)- it's a research statement and a bit different from Personal statement (PS).
Your SOP should be about 4 parts:

1/n
1. Introduction, interests & motivations.- a very brief & direct description of yourself

2. Brief description of your undergrad (or MSc) journey- important modules, your publications, past research, conferences- point out just the significant things & why they’re important. 2/n
3. Your activities- past or current-; work experience, leadership or volunteer that prepared you for graduate school and specifically for that MSc/PhD you’re applying

4. Discuss more on your research interests- the question you would like to study for MSc/PhD,

Skype Interview with Professor

So, a professor (PI) finally replied your email:- “Hi, I'd like to chat with you to learn more about your interest” Congratulations. This chat is for them to connect the dot, see if there’s a fit & whether you will make a good candidate. 1/n
This thread gives an overview of the meeting and some questions you can/should ask PIs to show research curiosity.

N.B: Solely based on my OWN experience & not a general model: I’ve participated in 10 Ph.D. Interviews, submitted 4 (based on my interest) with 2 offers. 2/n

PROSPECTIVE GRADUATE STUDENTS

Wondering why you’re not getting responses after sending emails to professors?
Even though funding or full lab might be a reason, but if your email is convincing enough, you should get a response of encouragement/possible collaboration. 1/n
Perhaps you’re guilty of one of the below points?
N.B: These are personal observations and not a general opinion of Professors.

If you’re looking for a thread on how to send an email, please see bit.ly/2BBnnga and bit.ly/3hLG3ZU . 2/n

NUMBER 1👇
1. Inappropriate Salutation- It’s easy to identify a spam email targeted at many Profs at a time. E.g: sending just “Dear Professor” will bring mixed feelings on whether you “Bcc” many profs.
Solution: Writing “Dear Dr or Professor ABC” is better. 3/n
