Notes on scholarly book/making collectives

for the @intercomverlag workshop 🛠Verlage Selber Machen🛠 drawing on work with @matteringpress @ScholarLed @COPIMproject
2/
We started the scholar-led press @matteringpress because our field of Science and Technology Studies, for all its critical knowledge & infrastructure studies lacked 👾engagement and experimentation 👾with scholarly publishing.

3/
Books contain multitudes (pages, people, politics); they are but the visible tips of densely infrastructured knowledge formations.
4/
Cutting books from bookmaking collectives yields books that can be finished, authored, owned, loved, sold and paywalled. Without cuts no books, but it matters who cuts, which relations, how and when?
5/
All academic publishers cut books from publicly-funded labour; selling public goods back to readers and libraries. #openaccess mandates that publicly funded research is available online for free, but...
6/
#openaccess says little about the relationships between books and their readers, researchers, writers, makers, aggregators, buyers, funders, haters, evaluators, remakers, caretakers and lovers.
7/
If academic books are machines that do not produce the stories, ways of working or collectives you need and desire, go scholar-led: build different machines, make different books...
8/

Publishing as research (method)

Scholar-led publishing can make publishing an integral part of research; taking serious and working with the fact that publishing–far from being an afterthought–thoroughly conditions analysis, writing and reading.
9/

Peer🤓(re)views & (re)writes

Books published scholar-led might invite annotation and peer (re)views and (re) writes, by opening margins, or the main text, for others before, during or post-publication.

See @matteringpress The Ethnographic Case
processing.matteringpress.org/ethnographicca…
10/

Processual publication

Scholar-led books can start life before publication and continue to evolve beyond the point of publication.

See @openhumanities Living Books about Life
livingbooksaboutlife.org
11/

Books remixed

Books published under @creativecommons licences can multiply and circulate in different versions, editions and remixes changing how scholars treat text.
12/

E) Data Books

Scholar-led publishing projects explore the relationship between books and large data sets; pushing how to write and read with machines; extending the notion that texts are performative.
13/

F) Publishing collectives

Processual publishing – led by diverse knowledge makers – can help articulate new collectives, shared politics and practices in and outside the academy.

see worldpece.org
or @PirateCare's syllabus.pirate.care
14/

G) Unviable books

Scholar driven publishers can make books that others consider not viable: weird, niche, super long, mega short, out of scope, early career, media-rich, processual, no market, ongoing, unfunded, collectively written, annotated, multi-format, data-driven etc
15/

New kinds of books change the role of scholar-led presses; asking for facilitators and instigators of book projects, as well as for makers and providers of infrastructures that make books circulate, findable, and preserved.
16/

(Digital) books are nothing without infrastructures but publishing platforms 💩💩💩 might grow bibliomonocultures; while open infrastructures nurture 🦄bibliodiversity🦄
17/
We started @ScholarLed, an association of scholar-led presses (@openhumanities @punctum_books @meson_press @OpenBookPublish @matteringpress) to work towards ecosystems where scholar-led publishers can thrive together while retaining their differences. oapen.hypotheses.org/93
18/

@scholarled now features the 2nd biggest collection of 557 #OAbooks on the Directory of Open Access Books exemplifying how open publishing infrastructures can inspire new relationships between books and bookmaking collectives.

Join us (@perillus1 @transbordeur_ph @isotype75 @tinasmussen @andkirchner @SpectorBooks @books_pp) today 16h CET, or on twitter, to rethink how books and bookmaking collectives relate. Thanks, @intercomverlag!!! cache.ch/blog/workshops…
