Good morning to you from the 49th state! This is Chris in the Morning on 57AM KBHR coming at you from the Minnifield Communication Network in beautiful downtown Cicely. #northernexposure thread

I don't know about you guys, but I've become a bit obsessed with politics lately. And it's a bit ironic, of course, because I'm not even allowed to vote. As you may recall, many years ago I spent some time in the State pen back in West Virginny for boosting a '71 Firebird...
...and well, that left me as a sort of persona non grata with respect to election participation. So, like some forbidden fruit, I'm now drawn to the process, perhaps moreso, because of my inability to partake. But despite my inability to cast a vote, I'm not short on opinions.
And my fellow Cicelians, this year my chakras are absolutely obstructed with it all - I'm not going to lie. I read the news, catch a bit of a debate on the tube, stumble upon a story on the interwebs and before I know it I'm fuming about one thing or another...
I was thinking about that when I stumbled upon this passage from the Buddhist sage Thích Nhất Hạnh in his book Being Peace:
“Humankind suffers very much from attachment to views.”
This speaks, of course, to the second noble truth of Buddhism: Samadaya. "Attachment is the root of suffering." And those of you who know me know I've not exactly 'suffered' when it comes to getting attached :)
But when it comes to attachments & obsession with one's political views, this topic gets extra sticky. A recent study documented that reading political news reduces your happiness 6% for every story you read or watch. SIX PERCENT PER STORY, campers! pure.uva.nl/ws/files/17278…
So if I read or watch 4 political stories this morning, I'm starting my day about 25% more bummed out. But at the same time, I ( and we) want to remain informed because so much is going on all of the time!
And it strikes me that of all the freedoms we've lost in the recent years, maybe this is the most fundamental. We've lost the freedom FROM the news. We've lost the comfort of being able to tune out for a while without fear we missed out on some injustice being imposed on us...
So what is the antidote? It's finding the balance, of course - the yin and yang. The give and take. But what's the antidote of getting bummed out on political news? If I've dug a 25% hole in my heart this morning, how can I fill it back in? What's a slam dunk happy drug?
Well, I gave up peyote years ago.
No, I'm talking charity, people. Doing something nice for someone. Helping someone. Giving of yourself. All the psychology supports it. When we do good by our fellow homo sapiens we get a drug rush from the best of all uppers - endorphins.
So - sure, binge away if you must on that news - stay informed and get good & bummed. But then get out there and find someone to help. Give of yourself. Grab an oar and pull, Cicely. You won't regret it.
Hola Cicely,
Chris in the Morning on KBHR 57AM coming at you from the Borough of Arrowhead. It's a nippy 35 degrees out there this morning, but we're going to get up to a positively balmy sunny 55 later on. (thread)
It's #Debates2020 night here in Cicely! Yes, the candidates for mayor are squaring off for the 1st time & the town is buzzing with excitement. For those unfamiliar, mayoral elections have been a hotly contested event since Edna Hancock unseated Holling Vincoeur's long-held reign.
Yes, we have a mayoralty race, folks. To which I can only add, alea jacta est. 'The die is cast', the battle is joined. Hold on to your hats, Cicely. We're about to bear witness to that sacred rite...
Goooooooood morning, Cicely!
It's Chris in the Morning coming at you from the KBHR studio in beautiful downtown Cicely, Alaska - 57AM on the dial. For some reason, I was thinking of karma when I awoke this morning.
Is karma just a disconnected cosmic happenstance, or does it have more to do with principles we all know and understand, like causality? Now, I'm no lawyer, but If we refer to the Brihadaranyaka texts of ancient Hinduism, I think I could make a compelling defense for the latter.
To wit,
"Now as a man is like this or like that,
according as he acts and according as he behaves, so will he be;
a man of good acts will become good, a man of bad acts, bad;
he becomes pure by pure deeds, bad by bad deeds"
Good Sunday morning, Cicely -
It's a brisk 31 degrees out there this morning so get your java brewing, wrap yourself up in your favorite blanket and set a spell while we watch that big ol' sun rise...#northernexposure (thread)
With these cold nights now descending upon us, the leaves have started their annual fireworks show, and I'm reminded that while we busy ourselves with our lives, our jobs, our little fights and disputes, this blue-green orb we live on is going to just keep turning on its axis...
Now, back in West Virginia, my Uncle Roy Bower used to look up at the stars and planets and the immensity of it all and just get overwhelmed. Maybe this is why he kept ending up in the pokey - the confined space and regimented schedule was more to his liking...
So I owe everyone an explanation and an apology. Several months ago the toxicity of everything going down, including on this little blue-bird site, started jamming up my chakras in a way I'd not felt in a long time. #northernexposure (thread).
As you may remember, the last time I felt that way, I jumped on the Harley & let her take me as far away as she would go, got naked, crawled into a cave & blissed out on enough peyote to stun a small bull.
While I don't have a clear recollection of how well that worked last time, let's just say that it failed pretty dismally THIS time. As it turns out, you can't run away from your problems, and you can't run away from the world's problems either.
The sun is peeking through the clouds and the ice on the lake is starting to groan - so for those sitting in their shanties ice fishing, be careful! (1/n) #northernexpsoure
Some local news: Maggie is reporting that since Maurice's lecture on "The Joy of Bidets" on Zoom the other evening, orders have ticked up on toilet conversion kits from Anchorage. If everyone wants to place a bulk order, we can get a discount. (2/n)
And in other news, the state pen is going to pipe in Cal Ingraham on Zoom who will be performing Mozart's violin concerto No. 3 for all of us - that's Wednesday night at 8:00 PM - don't miss out! I'll send out the link shortly. (3/n)
It's a groggy Chris in the Morning coming at you from 57AM K-B-H-R.
I don't know about you, but that ol' moon had my dreams spinning wild last night. (1/n) #northernexposure
Howlin' at the Moon - Hank Williams Sr. via @YouTube
A quick check of my Farmer's Almanac reminded me that last night was a super-moon - and that's not just hyperbole...it's a verified scientific phenomenon. Our little pasty planetary kid sister is this closest she'll be to us and last night - she sure put on a show...(2/n)
The full moon of April is also known as the Pink Moon - owing to the little pink wildflowers that are busting out left and right. (3/n)
