Unfortunately, I spend a lot of time on here talking about the rise of fascism and how that poisonous ideology destroys democracy and society.

I want to take a second to talk about how to fight back on a personal level as it is weaponized trauma inflicted on the individual.

1/
Fascism, as I've written about, is an attack on reality that's meant to radicalize people by racist paranoia, but also in how it atomizes society, makes us feel alone, powerless, and continually inflicts personal harm.

Here are a few thoughts and resources to combat this.

2/
Because fascism constantly shifts and relies on propaganda that intentionally fractures objective reality, I endorse @sarahkendzior 's advice to keep a journal.

The internet is shifting type, media cycles are numbing, but we can keep a record of what we know to be true.

3/
By having our thoughts and experiences in front of us on a sheet of paper that no one, not Trump, not Fox, not social media, can touch or pervert, we can know what we have ACTUALLY seen and it can anchor us when the fascists attempt to destroy reality.

4/
Like @sarahkendzior has said, make a list of the things you will not do, the atrocities you will not let stand, because fascism absorbs society slowly and things can change without you noticing it.

Anchor yourself in reality and in your principles.

5/
Likewise, I cannot endorse more the efforts by people like my dear @akmiska whose work centers on trauma and healing in the midst of a fascistic movement that intends to harm us and make us feel powerless and alone.

6/

tinyletter.com/feelfreewitham…
The personal is political and the political personal. We have to work hard to heal ourselves while we're working to heal society. This is something @akmiska has championed for years, and it's why I keep saying we have to build communities.

7/

tinyletter.com/feelfreewitham…
Fascists depend on us being isolated, alone, and frightened. When we rebuild our communities and remember that political power should come from the ground up instead of from the state down, we challenge the entire presumption of reality that makes fascism possible.

8/
Reach out to friends, family, loved ones, neighbors, community members. Rebuild trust and intimacy. These are natural antidotes to fascism and can blunt its power over politics and culture.

They need atomized, isolated societies in order to thrive.

9/
And finally, remember that the online space is both constantly changing and artificial.

You can keep up on politics without being flooded by it. Trust that you can take time for yourself, to heal, to rest, to reenergize yourself. The internet and politics will wait.

10/
Part of rebuilding communities to not just battle fascism but to extend beyond this crisis and build a better world is trusting that when you are tired and weary and beat you can take a second to rest and someone will pick up the load.

Log off sometimes. Take a breath.

11/
This fight is about more than just November, more than just Donald Trump. This is about what kind of world is possible and whether we live the rest of our lives in darkness.

It's going to take a lot of energy, a lot of focus, and a lot of effort. Hang in there.

12/
If you have resources, whether it's to build community or take care of yourself, reply to this thread.

If you're weary, and I know you are, check out these resources I've provided and the ones below.

Keep your head up and keep fighting.

I'm grateful Mike Lee came out explicitly opposing democracy so we can talk about Trump, Republicans as fascists, our white supremacist founding, and America's direct link to Nazism.

For more on this hidden history, pick up my book AMERICAN RULE.

I just recorded the second AMERICAN RULE lecture on this topic: the founding of America wasn't the mythological fairytale we've been told. It was a move by wealthy, white, slaveholding men to consolidate power.

It was vehemently anti-democratic.

2/

Mike Lee gave away the entire store.

What the Republican Party is doing right now is trying to destroy all democratic institutions in order to maintain power even as they are becoming a very small minority of the country.

It's fascism. A rewinding of the clock.

Let's talk about Trump's fascist posturing last night, the death cult that worships him, and how fascism is a war on reality as well as masculine overcompensation.

To be clear, we're in deep, deep, DEEP trouble.

For more, read my book AMERICAN RULE.

I want to be right up front with this. We're in the grips of a fascist movement in this country that operates like a murderous death cult.

This is what happens when a country with a nationalist religion begins to falter. We have to call it what it is

2/

Trump performed live propaganda last night, staging for Americans a show of strength and power, ripping the mask off, posturing, all of it a matter of reassuring everyone he was stronger than the virus.

It was fascist propaganda. Pure and simple.

Let's break it down.

All right.

We have to talk about Trump, his doctors, reality being purposefully altered by Republicans, and how this represents a fascistic threat to America.

For more of this disturbing history and a way out, consult my new book AMERICAN RULE.

I was going to write about this tomorrow, but this situation is so rapidly changing and escalating that there's no time to spare.

This madness with Trump's medical condition is the encapsulation of a decades' long war on reality by the Republican Party in order to gain power

2/
What you need to understand is this bizarre moment is a result of years and years of Republican efforts to discredit science and experts in order to maintain control and consolidate power.

It's created a partnership between the GOP and a fascistic movement that endangers us.

I get into this in AMERICAN RULE.

Republicans realized they couldn’t maintain power in reality, so they created their own paranoid world and vilified democracy and science.

This is how you get Trumpism and a team of “doctors” who traffic in propaganda.

penguinrandomhouse.com/books/611439/a…
The myths of white supremacy and American Exceptionalism are lies with no basis in reality. Empirical evidence shows us they’re untrue.

But Republicans rely on the lie for power, profit, and control. To protect it, they war against reality, democracy, and science.
Of course Trump’s doctors and administration are lying. Lying is their only move at any time. Fascism friends on the lie because it’s founded on the lie.

It’s the worship of the lie.

Even a momentary glimpse of truth is enough for the brittle ideology of fascism to crumble.

When powers begin to fade they lose the ability to better living conditions, respond to crises, or even provide the basic necessities of life.

They collapse in on themselves and offer nothing but lies about reality and violence to enforce the propaganda.
This path that we’re on, with Trumpism, fascism, and the dying myths of American exceptionalism and white supremacy, is a road to death.

We’re experiencing societal rot right now and this moment should be warning enough that we’d better right our course in a hurry.
Our failure to address the pandemic, economic inequality, the rise of paramilitary extremism, the creep of managed democracies, one natural disaster after another, the existential threat of climate change...these are portents.

This farce with Trump is late-stage Americanism.

Trump is a fascist.

Last night he told us he will refuse to accept defeat and is willing to rely on violence and paramilitary extremists to maintain his hold on power.

History shows us where this leads.

Here's what I learned writing AMERICAN RULE.

1/

penguinrandomhouse.com/books/611439/a…
We are facing a perfect storm.

An authoritarian in power, a party that has no principles, extremists willing to use violence and murder as a weapon, and a country in denial about its situation.

We must wake up. We must reckon with this.

2/

themuckrake.com/main/perfectst…
Last night at the debate Trump continued to refuse any possibility he might lose a free and fair election, undermined the possibility of a real result, and sent a message to his violent followers to "standby."

This is a fascist movement. It's not politics as usual.
