This year I'm leading a seminar on the "Armchair Investigation" #OSINT class at @KCL_CSSS @warstudies - I've asked students to bring interesting #OSINT stories to class. Here's a running collection: 1/
2/ Using EXIF data to speculate about Trump's state of health
3/ @bellingcat @SkyNews and @guardian investigation reveals British riot gear used in US police brutality despite government assurances
4/ @SheffieldBlast used social media videos to estimate the yield of the Beirut explosion
5/ Azerbaijani music video provides more insights into their military kit (not the first time....)
6/ Joint media - @bellingcat investigation reveals British manufactured sniper rifles are being used by the Russian military -
7/ Undoubtedly the biggest #OSINT story for the next 24hrs - North Korean military parade #juchefest2020 is being streamed now by North Korean state media - with commentary via @nknewsorg
8/ Some great examples in response to this tweet by @shashj from earlier in the year -
9/ Crowdsourcing the geolocation of a picture of poet W. H. Auden
10/ As predicted North Korea's parade -- the video and photographs -- have yielded some interesting insights into the country's missile and military programmes. How big exactly is the new huge ICBM?
11. Anyone looking for a #OSINT geolocation challenge?
12. Russian trade data reveals that North Korea spent almost $1 mil on a "mystery item" weighing 4.8 tons, and two very powerful gas turbine engines. Via @nknewsorg nknews.org/pro/north-kore…
13. Photographs of the wreckage seem to verify Scud missile used against civilian area in Azerbaijan yesterday
14. A @bellingcat investigation into US religious conservative groups working to undermine #LGBT rights in Ukraine.
15. Azerbaijani government footage gives insights into equipment captured from Armenia in the ongoing conflict.
16. Did open sources provide the CIA with intelligence suggesting that Russian operatives were at work in close proximity to their officers “hit” by mysterious microwave weapons? According to. @GQMagazine Image
17. Is Russia resuming testing of a nuclear-powers cruise missile? Open source imagery suggests so. From @ArmsControlWonk and @DuitsyWasHere
18. Giuliani is caught with his hands down his pants -- @AricToler found the hotel. 😬
19. Open source satellite imagery providing insights into coronavirus deaths in Aden, Yemen. Further uses for #OSINT to respond to humanitarian crises from @LSHTM ? lshtm.ac.uk/newsevents/new… h/t @deebshal for pointing this one out.
20. From last week - OSINT insights into Russia's poisons programme from @bellingcat bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…

Pleased to share a new article - a deep dive on the North Koreans use of diplomats and embassy in East Berlin to illegally procure 86 US manufactured Hughes helicopters in the late 1980s 1/5 doi.org/10.1080/026845…
These aircraft -publicly revealed in a 2013 parade- appear still in service in DPRK & were a source of concern in the 1980s as ROK and US forces used the same model around the DMZ. The US and ROK worried these “look-a-likes” could be used to disrupt the 1988 Seoul Olympics 2/5 Image
The allied commands in Berlin struggled to counter the network supplying these aircraft and spare parts- with the North Koreans using diplomatic immunity to run a procurement front company in West Berlin. Essentially a technological tunnel to the heart of the West. 3/5 Image

Well this looks wild! Documentary claims to expose North Korea trying to dodge sanctions bbc.com/news/world-asi…
The mole sits down for lunch with President of a North Korean arms factory in a basement restaurant near Pyongyang - and is allegedly offered various types of weapons systems including ballistic missiles - 5 SCUDs for $14mil
SCUD-E missiles? Would that be SCUD-ER? Range of 1,350km seems a bit generous - sounds more like a Nodong range 🤔
