/5 Today is #WorldHomelessDayworldhomelessday.org
In Wandsworth there are over 2,500 statutory homeless families in temporary accommodation (up from 400 in 2010), with roughly 3,300 children (3,000 last year). About 800 families are out of the borough, mostly in B&Bs.
/5 As Covid has taken hold, rough sleeping in Wandsworth went up by over 400%. Most were housed in hotels, now those must be permanently housed and help given to maintain their tenancies. Many have “No recourse to public funds,” they must continue to be treated equally.
/5 We must build more council rent homes, public land must be used to maximise additional council rent homes. Wandsworth have built far too few social rent homes, just 5.5% of total from 2016-19. Here’s the Shelter report: england.shelter.org.uk/support_us/cam…

/5 The government need to end “no fault” evictions, which is the number one cause of homelessness, especially now as the ban on evictions is ended and 174,000 tenants in the UK in Covid related arrears, threatened with eviction. Government must stop evictions for these arrears.
