The Premier League have announced that they're going to make 'a number' of their games Pay-Per-View in the middle of a health crisis at a time when fans cannot go to the games. All-but-one of the clubs voted in favour of this change. A rant...
Firstly, it's not the first time the Premier League has squeezed supporters for cash, lots of us already pay bloated prices for Sky packages, BT packages (which are full of adverts for more products and betting to waste cash). This is whilst also paying c.£500 for a season ticket
So, on the assumption that say, half of the Saints’ games, are in PPV from here. I pay about £35 quid PM for TV sports (which I only got this season for the football). 22 games left so say 12 x £15.
8 Months of TV = 280
12PPV games = 180
Total = 460
Four-hundred-and-sixty-quid.
Plus, for those of us that have already paid for a ST that we can’t use, we’re a grand down, just for the pleasure of FIFA crowd noise and co-commentators that don’t apparently know the rules.
For most of us, that is a shit deal, but for a lot of people in the wider football community, this is a stake in the heart.
We all know that there are many football fans around the country that rely on football, their team and their sport (because it is theirs, it is not Sky’s) just to get through.
Think of the families out there, that might have taken a risky step to pay the £30 monthly for their son or daughter to watch their side, in the middle of a health crisis, for something good to hold onto when there’s very little else that is as good.
Those families are now out of pocket and staring at the possibility of paying yet more cash that they might not have to still have that pleasure.
Many people that have lost their jobs recently, trying to enjoy the sport they love, again perhaps making the stretch for a Sky or BT package so they can try and forget their trouble for a couple of hours (essentially one of the reasons the football league even existed),
These people are now are left high and dry by all-but-one of our supposed ‘community pillars’.
I’ve rarely been so angry. Football is by the people, for the people and if clubs can spend over a billion pounds in the transfer window, they can live without your additional £15 for a televised game.
Don’t pay it.
I think this should be a time where we all come together as a football fan's community and give a combined finger to these blatant examples of squeezing us all dry because they think we are all mugs. – We are not.
