A day before Reina Mae Nasino's filing of a motion with a Manila court, KAPATID reiterates there is no reason for the court to deny Reina Mae her right to be at the wake of River, her 3-month old daughter. #JusticeForBabyRiver #FreeReinaMaeNasino #FreePoliticalPrisonersPH
“The court should swiftly grant the grieving mother's appeal to visit her dead child and to be present until her baby is brought to her final resting place. For Reina Mae who barely had the chance to spend a...
...lot of time with her child, nothing will be more tragic than losing what could be her last chance to stay with her firstborn one last time,” said Fides Lim, KAPATID spokesperson.
Tomorrow October 12 at 10 a.m., Reina Mae's counsels from NUPL will physically file a manifestation with Manila executive judge Virgilio Macaraig, who also heads Manila RTC Branch 37, to follow through the “Very Urgent Motion for Furlough” that was filed last Friday, October 9.
Reina Mae lost her child without seeing her alive for the last time as the motion is still pending in court.
Knowing how the government prosecutors opposed the young mother's several motions prior to her child's admission at a hospital for exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, KAPATID said they...
...see “no reason why the government prosecutors should even think of opposing the motion this time unless they want to compound the anguish of a mother whom they put in jail on trumped-up charges of planted firearms.”
“We earnestly ask the court to give Reina Mae this last chance to see her child. She's already been deprived of a lot of things – liberty when she fell victim to the government's crackdown on activists; the chance of giving birth without worrying for her safety and of her...
...child when she spent most of her pregnancy inside prison and at a time of a pandemic; the chance to take care of her baby when she got separated from her after one month. Now that River has died, Reina Mae lost a lifetime to witness her grow up,” Fides said.
“Please, grant the motion and let a mother grieve properly at her baby’s side. The smallest coffin is the heaviest and the sorrow it brings, the most painful,” Fides appealed.
“We also press for action on Reina Mae’s humanitarian release, which we filed way back April 8 in the Supreme Court. This government and the courts, including the Supreme Court, have already created too much sorrow for a mother and child. Tama na,” she said.

After the tragic death of Reina Mae Nasino's 3-month old child, KAPATID pressed for her release to let her grieve the untimely demise of her firstborn and as a matter of justice as one of her counsels laid out the reasons why she does not deserve even a single day in prison.
“We appeal for the release of Reina Mae who lost her child without having the chance to see her alive for the last time. There is no reason for the courts to deny Reina Mae her right to visit the wake of her child and give her temporary freedom when it’s the least they can...
...do as an act of justice to redress the multiple injuries done to her, which include what could have been the preventable death of her child had a judge acted without bias,” said Fides Lim, the spokesperson of Kapatid.

KAPATID embraces Reina Mae in this moment of grief. River died at the ICU of PGH at 8:50 pm, October 9, more than two weeks since she was brought to the hospital after exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. She died of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. #FreeReinaMaeNasino Image
There are no words to describe the anguish that Reina Mae is feeling now. She was denied of her right to take care of her child and to see her at the hospital while still alive and was struggling for a chance to survive.
We assert our call for the compassionate release of Reina Mae from prison to correct this blatant injustice done to her and her baby who was never given a chance to live. We ask the court and the government to allow Reina Mae to grieve with her family in this period in her life.
