The crush of news is unrelenting but don’t miss this:

‘As a candidate, Trump vowed to drain the swamp. But he did not merely fail to end favor-seeking; he reinvented it, turning his hotels and clubs into the new back rooms, where special interests reign.’ nytimes.com/interactive/20…
‘Trump built a system of direct presidential influence-peddling unrivaled in modern American politics’

By 9 NYT reporters.
Under huge financial stress before his election, Trump’s businesses discovered a lucrative new revenue steam: people who wanted something from the president.
NYT found more than 220 individuals, groups and companies that had business before the Trump administration and patronized the president’s resorts and hotels. Nine in 10 were successful.
A portrait of government for sale under Trump.
Trump attended 34 fund-raisers at his properties, events that brought his hotels and resorts $3 million apart from the donations.
‘Sometimes he lined up his donors to ask what they needed from the government.’
It’s hard not to read this and conclude that for Trump, being president has been a shake-down opportunity for his family company.

S.C. absentee ballot received by a voter after SCOTUS ruling Monday that witness signatures *are* required. Seems likely to lead to many discarded votes.
S.C. does not have a process for notifying voters of a missing signature to allow them to ‘cure’ a discarded ballot. lwv.org/newsroom/press…
Election Board records show this ballot was mailed to the voter on Oct 7, two days after the SCOTUS decision. It arrived on Friday.

On the day POTUS returned to the WH and whipped off his mask, I spoke with voters in central PA, including many who scoffed at the threat of the virus nytimes.com/2020/10/06/us/…
My main takeaway: many Trump voters were full of misinformation about Covid that echoes the false claims the president has made all year.
E.g., they falsely claimed that data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on deaths and cases were wrong, that getting the virus was no worse than getting the flu, and that it was introduced and kept in the spotlight only by Mr. Trump’s Democratic opponents.

Fasten you’re seatbelts, Ohio results won’t be known for at least 10 days after Nov 3.

—Trump is likely to lead the Election Night in-person vote

—Mail ballots accepted for 10 days
if postmarked by Nov 3. But no interim results announced before 10 days dispatch.com/story/news/pol…
A couple of caveats: Ohio is unlikely to be the tipping point state. And election officials can process absentee ballots received prior to Election Day, scan them and report results soon after polls close Nov 3.

Ernst’s job approval handling coronavirus has dipped into negative territory 38 approve/41 disapprove.

She recently echoed a conspiracy theory about CDC Covid death stats and suggested doctors had financial incentives to falsely report cases.
More here on the QAnon driven conspiracy that Ernst echoed, later walking it back

Over the weekend, @SenJoniErnst also spoke to the issue:

“What we do want to see as Iowans is just clarity in how things are being reported, how it’s being collected and how it’s being portrayed to the American people...."

‘This is a choice between a court that will defend your healthcare and take your healthcare away’ is the message Biden intends to run on after the death of RBG. Protecting coverage of preexisting conditions was Dems’ successful 2018 message. nytimes.com/2020/09/19/us/…
Biden will speak at 2pm ET today about SCOTUS in Philadelphia, per press pooler
Though Trump has claimed >100 times that he will protect people w preexisting conditions, he is in court trying to end the ACA that does that; he has never unveiled a replacement plan despite endless promises; and he has issued rules to allow plans that deny coverage to the sick.

The 'dark shadows' Q&A:

Ingraham: Who do you think is pulling Biden’s strings? Is it former Obama officials?

Trump: People that you’ve never heard of. People that are in the dark shadows. People that…

Q: ...That sounds like conspiracy theory. Dark shadows, what is that?

1/
Trump: No. People that you haven’t heard of...that are on the streets....We had somebody get on a plane from a certain city this weekend & in the plane it was almost completely loaded with thugs wearing these dark uniforms, black uniforms with gear and this and that...

2/
Q: Where—where was this?

Trump: I’ll tell you sometime, but it’s under investigation right now, but they came from a certain city, and this person was coming to the Republican National Convention, and there were like seven people on the plane like this person...
