With 24 hours before voting starts, my opponent put up these signs at voting sites across our district.
This is what our politics has become under Donald Trump. Division, lies, and fear. The goal is to make us so afraid that we can’t see or hear each other.
After the murders of George Floyd and Javier Ambler, our campaign proudly donated to a well-respected civil rights organization in our community that champions educational equity, economic opportunity, and police reform.
We did it publicly, and asked our supporters to match our donation. Because we believe #BlackLivesMatter
These black and white signs with giant letters are designed to suggest something nefarious, something dangerous. They’re designed to make us afraid.
But we don’t have time to be afraid. Lives are at stake.
How do we create true public safety for everyone in our community? How do we get the virus under control? How do we improve education, expand healthcare, & save our economy? These questions deserve more than 10 words on a sign. They deserve thoughtful, honest, courageous answers.
The words “fear not" appear 366 times in the Bible. Scripture teaches us that we can’t love each other if we’re afraid because “there is no fear in love.” Love and fear are mutually exclusive. That’s why they work so hard to keep us scared.
In 22 days, we can reject the politics of fear and end this dark chapter in our history. We can build a new politics. A politics of courage, a politics of hope, a politics of love.
Fear not.
