Liz Truss & Boris Johnson want you to eat these ‘foods’, and without knowing, because the last thing the Americans will allow is proper labelling
The amount of salmonella on US pork is 10 times higher than on UK pork; & 70% of US beef has e-coli on it
And Trump is reducing the number of govt inspectors & allowing unlimited speeds of meat plant lines so each carcass is inspected for contamination for - 2.6 seconds
And their routine use of antibiotics in meat animals is 5 times higher than in the UK - where it’s bad enough; this means alarming antibiotic resistance & people at risk of dying as a result.
(My husband needed a cocktail of antibiotics to save his life from sepsis in 2015)
Pesticide use is 10 times ours, with health-threatening residues on fruit & veg.
US food industry very powerful; make big political donations; revolving door of industry execs with regulators
And since 2017 post-Brexit ref, the number of US-type poultry & pig mega factory ‘farms’ in the UK has greatly increased

No wonder the government doesn’t want the membership of SAGE revealed... theguardian.com/world/2020/apr…
“Former chief scientific adviser Sir David King said he was ‘shocked’ to discover there were political advisers on Sage. ‘If you are giving science advice, your advice should be free of any political bias. That is just so critically important’.”
“Since the outbreak, ministers have stuck to the script that their policies are guided by scientific advice, while declining to reveal where the advice is coming from or what exactly it contains.”
And now we know why.

“Last week, a senior adviser to Downing Street broke ranks and blamed the weeks of complacency on a failure of leadership in cabinet. In particular, the prime minister was singled out.”

Name this ‘senior adviser’!

“The training to prepare key workers for a pandemic had been put on hold for two years while contingency planning was diverted to deal with a possible no-deal Brexit.”
@devisridhar, professor of global public health at Edinburgh University, had predicted in a talk two years earlier that a virus might jump species from an animal in China and spread quickly to become a human pandemic. So the news from Wuhan set her on high alert.”

“the great allure of promise to Get Brexit Done was in the idea of ‘done’ meaning not just achieved but ‘done with’ – finished, dead, laid to rest. It recast 2016-19 no longer as glorious struggle for a joyful emancipation, but as bad trip from which everyone had to come down.”
“In the ultimate irony, Brexit has ceased to be a release from the EU and has become a release from itself. Brexit has morphed from Let My People Go to Let My People Stop Banging On About Brexit.”

Shocking that “London’s ⁦@metpoliceuk⁩ will start using live facial recognition on the capital’s streets, ignoring concerns from politicians, data regulators & human rights groups over the highly invasive and often inaccurate biometric technology.”
ft.com/content/a2c8b9…
“The decision follows last week’s announcement by the @EU_Commission that it was considering banning facial recognition technology across the bloc for 5 years while policymakers create a regulatory framework.”

So privacy invasion is a #Brexit benefit, eh?
.@libertyhq:
“Aside from Orwellian nature, this tech is particularly bad news if you’re a woman or person of colour. It’s been known to misidentify these groups, meaning you’re more likely to be stopped, questioned and searched by the police if you’re a woman or if you’re BAME”

My criticism of the BBC’s coverage of the EU & more recently #Brexit does not @huwbbc have ‘the deliberate aim of undermining & delegitimising’ but is very longstanding, based on the BBC’s failure to make its political journalists understand & therefore properly report the EU
To save his blushes, I will not name the BBC Westminster correspondent who was sent to Brussels 6 weeks before the 2014 Euro-elections to cover them at EU end. I spent an hour trying to explain the basics of EU functioning to him, he hadn’t a clue and it was Ladybird book level.
Or the one sent much earlier as Europe editor who I only saw once in 3 years in the Parliament; after that (even though we MEPs had ‘co-decision’ powers on laws), this person found the Council & Commission a much easier, less complicated, gig

‘Seldom do opposition parties have as much power to prevent damage to the lives of millions of their voters. Even more seldom do they squander it in the way Jeremy Corbyn has so far’ theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
‘Labour’s current approach – that it wants a mandate via a general election to negotiate a better withdrawal deal – is just as irresponsible as the government’s’
“The Labour leadership’s pretence that they can negotiate a Brexit that maintains the ‘exact same’ benefits of EU membership while curtailing freedom of movement is sheer fantasy”
