Some extremely sad news to share. Izumi Matsumoto, the creator of Kimagure Orange Road, passed away on October 6th--shared in a blog post today on his official website: comic-on.co.jp/hidiary/hidiar… Mangaka Izumi Matsumoto with his cat.
He suffered from Spinal Stenosis, which made it extremely difficult for him to work on art or manga. This is the main reason why even though Kimagure Orange Road was a hugely popular & influential series, he didn't do much afterwords because it was just too much for him.
Madoka Ayukawa, the main love interest of the series, is most commonly credited to popularizing the Tsundere archetype in shonen manga. Matsumoto was very influenced by the shojo manga his sisters lent him as a kid, leading to KOR becoming a romantic comedy with magical elements. Currently, the KOR manga is only available in English thru Digit×l Manga, but considering how poorly they treated him & their Kickstartr backers, I've never purchased it. To me, it felt like they were exploiting his situation of being in poor health & needing money.
But if you'd like to experience Kimagure Orange Road in some way, the anime is available to stream in full in North America on Crunchyroll. It's a charming 80s series with great music & animation. A bit dated at times of course but still highly enjoyable. crunchyroll.com/kimagure-orang…
ANN has more history with his health in their article, for those curious

Jumped out of bed to get an early morning package!! Lol is anyone actually surprised I bought all the Ranma 1/2 Hobonichi collab stuff for next year? 🤣 (since there were no cons this year, I used money I'd normally set aside for that on it...kinda lucky, as shipping was high!) Ranma 1/2 designed Hobonichi techo products, including a wee
I'd been considering trying a Weeks, and WELP....I finally caved after seeing the Ranma lenticular cover they did for this. ITS SO NEAT IN PERSON!!
For those who don't know: Hobonichi is a Japanese planner & journal system, interestingly created by the guy who created Earthbound! This year they started a new line of products featuring classic manga. You can learn more about it here: 1101.com/store/techo/en…

DID YOU KNOW that to celebrate Kaiji reaching 500 chapters, Young Magazine had a bunch of mangaka draw Kaiji to celebrate?

That included one drawn by CLAMP. CLAMP loves Kaiji!! (Which, if you're familiar with CLAMP's works and Kaiji....that isn't a big surprise. 😂) CLAMP's drawing of Kaiji holding a black Mokona.
Here's a Kaiji drawn by Tetsuya Chiba, best known as the creator of Ashita no Joe! Kaiji drawn in Tetsuya Chiba's style.
For you Baki The Grappler fans, here's Kaiji drawn by Keisuke Itagaki! Really intense. ざわ ざわ. Kaiji drawn in Keisuke Itagaki's style.

There's a thread going around about how being an anime fan was "better" in the time when we got maybe 20 anime VHS released a year officially & we had to find fansubs for anything else...and as someone who lived through those times, I'm here to tell you: that's a load of BS.
Sure, I often talk about being nostalgic (lol) for anime from that era, but MAN O MAN I sure don't miss having to send money to complete strangers via snail mail & pray that a. it doesn't get lost and b. the person isn't a scammer who'll just take my money & run.
I also don't miss having to be polite to creeps & jerks just because they're the only local people who also like anime. And the gatekeepy folks that would tell me my taste in everything sucked, I wasn't a "true otaku" for whatever arbitrary reasons they invented, etc etc.
