My friend @Ash_Bash23 is a Black, trans disabled activist who was recently fired by Greenpeace in the middle of a pandemic. Ash turned down a small severance that would've required them to sign a non-disclosure agreement that I'm glad they didn't sign. bit.ly/helpash
Because while one month’s pay and housing is more than most people get upon being fired, it is not enough to start over during a pandemic -- especially for a Black, trans, disabled person. They deserve so much more, fam. bit.ly/helpash
As Ash notes on their crowdfund page, marginalized people have always navigated crises by sharing their struggles and traumas, and by helping each other overcome obstacles to our safety and survival. NDA’s obstruct that dynamic. bit.ly/helpash
Other concerning aspects of the situation are events that unfolded prior to Ash being fired, such as them being reprimanded for spending too much time organizing Black Lives Matter protests and jail support in recent months. bit.ly/helpash
They were also told by a supervisor that abolition is not consistent with climate justice. This is a gross misunderstanding (that reflects a total unwillingness to learn) on the part of that supervisor. bit.ly/helpash
I cannot begin to express how offensive and false an assertion it is to state that abolition is not a climate justice issue. bit.ly/helpash
It is also deeply inappropriate for someone in a position of authority at a nonprofit to make such statements without investigating anything about abolition, its history, or connection to major issues. Ash was treated horribly here. bit.ly/helpash
Large nonprofits have a habit of embracing marginalized people and marginalized perspectives when it’s en vogue to do so, and abandoning them when they are not. We have seen this play out in chilling ways since abolition recently went in and out of style. bit.ly/helpash
So I am asking for y’alls help making sure my dear friend gets the severance package they deserve, from people who actually care and won’t seek to silence them. bit.ly/helpash
I believe that our solidarity can do more for Ash than GP was offering to & that we can help them get the fresh start they deserve. Pls join me in this effort if you can. This is someone I love & I'm determined to make sure they're OK during the pandemic. bit.ly/helpash
So much love to everyone who is helping out. I told Ash to be hopeful, and that, after all they have done for others, I thought they should give people a chance to show up for them. Thank you for making that true. We will get them through this. bit.ly/helpash
With everything that's happening, a lot of people I love are in danger right now. I think about it all the time, and I agonize over how little I can do about. This we can do something about. We can make sure Ash has what they need to survive & start over. bit.ly/helpash
I came across something funny. In 2018, Greenpeace seemed to think highly of abolition. Now, they've reprimanded someone for organizing too many BLM protests/jail support & told them abolition is not a climate justice issue, & fired them during a pandemic. greenpeace.org/usa/prisonstri…
Like I said, NGO's often drift away from marginalized people & marginalized frameworks when they go out of style. Look at the way they talked about abolition, and look at who's now being thrown under bus in a clumsy dash to the center. Support Ash, y'all. fundrazr.com/31j1e2?ref=ab_…
I can't get past the fact that in 2018 Greenpeace was talking up abolition, and talking about how they brought an environmental justice lens to that work (there already was one btw, going back decades), but now abolition is not an environmental justice issue? I call bullshit.
Shout out to @LVEJO for their solidarity tonight. Y'all are amazing. bit.ly/helpash
This is why I talk about how fascism changes us, whether we are conscious of it or not. It doesn't just affect its adherents. It shifts the moral ground beneath our feet and makes us more capable of tolerating atrocity. We must build around our collective well being instead.
People sometimes hear me say "we must resist the further normalization of mass death" and say it is already fully normalized. They simply are not talking about the level of human disposal, suffering and potential extermination that I am.
Fascism is not the process of people who didn't suffer before suffering alongside those who always have. It involves a lot people who didn't before getting fucked over AND people who were already getting fucked over experiencing new levels of horror, suffering and annihilation.
I am glad their son recovered without symptoms. I fear people caged in the prison industrial complex, including migrant children, may not fare as well.
As an organizer who’s been talking about fascism for several years, I've been contacted by a lot of people lately who are concerned about safety, the threat of right-wing violence and other manufactured chaos. This episode is my best attempt at a response. truthout.org/audio/searchin…
Normalization is a biological inevitability. Our bodies can't withstand a constant state of hypervigilance and terror, so our heart rates adjust, our blood pressure adjusts, and every so slowly, our feelings adjust. Fears become increasingly intellectual. truthout.org/audio/searchin…
A lot of people have been processing their fears more intellectually than emotionally for a while now, bc doing so has been their best internal defense against the Trumpian onslaught. Now, the magnitude of the threat is hitting people like a ton of bricks. truthout.org/audio/searchin…
I've also seen a Greenpeace employee tell a huge crowd that ableism only refers to physical disabilities -- and it wasn't a hot take, they legit just didn't know better and were somehow leading the training, so yeah. There is a rich history of them making BS pronouncements.
I seriously had to bring that training to a halt, as a participant, and explain to everyone (a mostly abled crowd) that we were witnessing ableism in real time and should learn from what was happening. The moment was not super appreciated.
So when I heard what Ash experienced, it was sadly consistent with things I have witnessed in the past. The transphobia, ableism and anti-Blackness they described are not surprising, unfortunately. You always hope orgs will improve, but they often don't. bit.ly/helpash
Most people do nothing to act or organize against voter suppression, or even think about it, until they're on here on election day, frantically yelling at people to stay in line. Maybe fight that shit ahead of time instead of waiting to yell at people.
I am really irked by this narrative about the Noble Voter who stays in line all day. It creates a standard by which others are judged, which is bullshit, bc the impacts of voter suppression are not the fault of the voter, and that BS also just lets everyone else off the hook.
It's like when people work three jobs to pay the rent and folks act like that's some heroic work ethic shit, as opposed to them struggling to survive the violence of capitalism and the gig economy.
I've had my beefs with Greenpeace over the years, but reprimanding a Black organizer for spending too much time on Black Lives Matter protests and jail support in this political moment is a real wtf. Firing a Black, disabled trans person during a pandemic is too.
One month's pay & housing is not enough to help someone start over right now, and even if they really needed to part ways, Greenpeace could've offered a lot more in the way of assistance, or not required an NDA. They know there are no jobs. They KNOW this. bit.ly/helpash
Greenpeace complaining about Ash spending too much time on jail support is shitty in general, but y'all COVID-19 is racing thru jails, prisons & detention centers. Black people are at higher risk. Supporting arrestees is even more life & death than usual. bit.ly/helpash
