I don't know how much it is on people's minds right now but some of my circles are talking more about crunch conditions because of Cyberpunk and while I don't want to add to that specific discussion, some thoughts came up about understanding phases of development better:
There is talk especially about recent trends where many large-scale games have a particularly long pre-production phase and pushing the development of the actual content production far back into the last year or so of development before release, which often causes crunch.
Often referred to as "the grind", it is the most difficult part of many dev cycles because it's often devoid of any new creative stuff and requires a team to just "make the game", work through all the content creation which is kind of a trot and can be tough to get through.
Now, maybe it would help folks to understand these phases a little better to understand why this shift exists and why the content phase can get pretty difficult. Estimating the time content takes can get tricky because it depends on how well your pipeline works after all.
But first, pre-production. In short, this is where a team figures out the game. What makes this game unique, where does it innovate, what's the look, the style, the feel? It's where we prototype, where we throw out a ton of things before settling on something.
Note: not every studio does it this way, some have a more dedicated creative phase for that, so heads up here.

More importantly: It's where a team works out workflows ahead of content phase and actual production, so there is a lot to try and predict here.
You're trying to set yourself up for success in pre-production and build your workflows and systems in a way that is hopefully as flexible as possible later down the road. That's tough because you're predicting how you'll make content for a game 2-3 years down the road.

I just lost my job at ArenaNet as of today as part of a re-shuffling of projects, which means I am looking for a job as a Game Designer pretty much immediately.

20 days until the election and we are truly in the middle of a fight for our lives and those of others.

Let's talk about the difference between how the left is doing poll work and defending safety for voters at the polls, because that's important.
While Trump himself is calling on people to "watch the polls" and is encouraging voter suppression, the left is trying hard to do informative trainings and events to defend everyone's right for safe voting in person across the country.
Trainings you can sign up for include topics such as:
- Poll monitoring
- Bystander Training
- De-escalation (!)
- Combating disinformation

Why does this matter? Because one action is about intimidation and the other is about helping people feel safe.

Next day of this and I have a lot of additional thoughts. First of all, it's REALLY sore and just very painful. Been icing it all morning.
I received a lot of messages from folks telling me about how awful their experience was with the implant - which is valid, but scary.
I'm not trying to discourage people from sharing their experience here, but it did make me frustrated that your only chance for really intrusive options for long-term BC are all trial-and-error and with a ton of potential side effects. That's just really inadequate.
The recommended time for trying any of the long-term option is 3-6 months at least - which means that you are expected to live through a ton of potentially really debilitating side effects for months on end until you know if it's for you or not.

Well. So. This is what I was up to this morning. With the SCOTUS going down the drain and with it likely reproductive rights, I felt forced to make a decision towards long-term birth control to protect myself for at least 5 years upwards. Not my fav thing to be forced into. Image
An implant lasts for 5 years and is hormonal based.

I've been thinking about a more permanent solution but am not comfortable having that decision forced onto me within 3 months, despite me being fairly certain that I do not want kids.
The reason why this discussion is important is because a LOT of people with uteruses in my circles have these discussions right now. How to protect themselves from what the shift on the SCOTUS could mean for our lives. Which is daunting and nobody should have to do this.
