When it comes to creating fear, one of the media's preferred techniques is to bring attention to tail-of-the-distribution events, even those down to the 6-sigma level, and portray them as somehow characterizing the mean.
I have years of immunity built up to this technique from following the climate debate. I have seen all-too-many occasions when the media extrapolates from a single data point, like a hurricane, into implied trends in mean behavior.
This works on a couple of levels--first, most media consumers cannot differentiate between the frequency of media coverage of a certain event & the underlying frequency of the event itself. Increased coverage of, say, hurricanes creates a perception that hurricanes are increasing
A great example of this observer bias effect and media coverage is the summer of the shark, where increased coverage of shark attacks led to an impression attacks were rising when in fact they were falling.

The other reason this technique works is most Americans can't differentiated between relative risks or even understand probability and distributions. Let me give one example.

Hitting a 100-year high for temperature for a particular day feels really rare and noteworthy. But...
On any given day, on average, 1/100th of the earth's surface will (on average) hit a 100-year high for that day. This means an area about half the size of the US will, on average, be experiencing a 100-year high temperature. Every single day.
For the Earth's population, something weird that happens to one person might be portrayed in the media as a threat. But with 8 billion people, even a 6-sigma tail of the distribution event would hit 27,000 people. Assuming 50 million COVID infected, 6-sigma is about 170 people.
So when the media tracks down 5 or 6 people who may have been reinfected, for example, recognize they are trying to imply mean behavior of this disease based on a nearly 7-sigma event.
I don't think it's any surprise there's a lot of overlap between climate skeptics and COVID response critics, as we in climate have seen these crazy media fear tactics and bad science for literally decades.

The State of California has created a state-run Roth IRA called CalSavers that all employers must offer to their employees in the state if they do not otherwise have a 401k or similar plan.
It is an opt-out program, meaning that the employee will automatically have 5-8% of their pay deducted and sent to the state for safe-keeping unless they explicitly call or write to the state to opt out.
I'm not going to comment on whether it's a good idea for workers to entrust their savings to an entity that can't stop itself from grabbing everyone's wealth, in part because once I'm an employer in the program it's illegal for me to opine on whether employees should participate

I know zero about the details of Trump's taxes. But it is perfectly possible to use the tax code exactly as Congress intended & pay little or no tax for years on strong cash income. One common reason is reinvesting profits with accelerated depreciation

"This is what everyone is calling a "loophole" but I think that is a misnomer. "Loophole" implies people are taking advantage of some drafting error or unanticipated use of an IRS rule. That happens all the time, but our example is not an unanticipated use. "
"In our example we are using IRS rules exactly as Congress intended -- the company is being rewarded by Congress for the investment it made in new equipment with a multi-year tax deferral."

Your late night climate test: Which is the following numbers is closest to the actual current concentration of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere. (many of my readers will get it right, but forward it to friends and most will get it wrong)
Please do not mock those who are very wrong. Years ago Steve Martin had a routine where he suggested how funny it would be to teach your kids to speak wrong. They would show up the first day at school and say "Mumbo dogface in the banana patch?"
Most Americans, including a lot of blue check marks like our new friend @warrenleightTV are like little children purposely taught wrong or islanders struggling for meaning using a cargo cult.

Well, first, I do apologize for being a twitter pr*ck which is a reason I am trying to give Twitter up.

Second, I AM angry at the misuse of data & science vis a vis COVID, defending science while actually abusing it.

Third, you are wrong. @markbspiegel
I know you are wrong because rather than trust media outlets like ABC, who have terrible credentials for handling data well AND have the incentive to exaggerate bad things, I have gone to many state web sites and checked their actual data methodology, as I did here first
Here is the daily death definition from the MO website:

"New Deaths Reported in the Last 24 Hours. The number of new deaths between yesterday’ count and
today’s. This is based on the date that the death was reported to DHSS and may reflect individuals who
died previously."

This is the sort of thing that makes us libertarians nuts. Sure, we will criticize the Republicans for their authoritarianism on multiple fronts. But this is a classic authoritarianism for me but not for thee arugment
The authors imply R authoritarianism is unique or substantially greater than authoritarianism on the Left. This is crazy. This year, mainly Democrat governors have shut down most businesses & locked people in their homes from MONTHS -- this has been unprecedented authoritarianism
In fact, in this election Democrats like Biden are running against Trump and Republicans specifically for being insufficiently authoritarian vis a vis COVID.

Minor life epiphany: When I realized a) that it was OK to tie shoe laces in patterns other than the standard criss cross and that it feels better on my foot to do so; b) what those little "extra" holes for shoelaces are for.
This is what those mystery holes are for. Tied in the way shown in the video, they really make a big difference particularly if you have heel slip issues.

Sorry, black on black on black is not easy to see, but I skip some spaces to give me more space for a high arch (or hump, if said in a Clouseau voice) and because I like more room in the toe area and then use the extra lace to do the thing in the video above Image
