Board discussion on the policy #BoardWatch
The board is curious how this has been playing out in Berkeley #BoardWatch
Board President @marksanchezsf is curious about the sizes of the zones #BoardWatch
Commissioner @rpnorton will the size of the zones be a part of the policy? There seems to be community concern about this #BoardWatch
What does this look like for historically under-served communities? #BoardWatch
Much more tailored than CTIP #BoardWatch
There will be a definition in the policy for what a historically under-served community is. The area will be even smaller so things can get more exact #BoardWatch
Many things to look at when constructing zones; traffic and transportation patterns, ways to make zones diverse, and some zones might have more schools than others #BoardWatch
Transportation will play a role in achieving our goals. Some of our transportation routes have not been updated since the 1970's. Bell times will also play into this #BoardWatch
Commissioner @stevoncook wants to know how EPC will engage with people about what these changes will mean #BoardWatch
To be effective there will have to be intention and investment in effective marketing to describe it properly across the city and to our families #BoardWatch
If the student assignment policy is successful at creating diverse schools, we have to create other policies to integrate school. This is a massively complicated problem. We have to be prepared and committed to not just describe what it is but implement it #BoardWatch
Commissioner @stevoncook thinks confidence in specific schools is important and wants this type of confidence to happen with zones. Wants to know how this will happen #BoardWatch
@rpnorton originally the middle school feeder policy was controversial but after two years of implementation, it was super popular. That could be the same here #BoardWatch
@stevoncook will there be an expansion of the transportation policy? #BoardWatch
Transportation will be supporting this new policy and helping students get to school. If zones are created for students with IEPs then routes can be created to support in zone transportation there is more predictability #BoardWatch
@rpnorton feels good about this plan that was created and how it balances all of our different priorities #BoardWatch
@OKeeffeOrla has enjoyed the ad hoc meetings and this work between the board and staff #BoardWatch
The first time this would be used is fall of 2023, so we have until fall 2022 to get this going and well communicated #BoardWatch

You can only make comments about the proposed elementary school student assignment policy. This is not the time to comment about the interim Lowell policy #BoardWatch
PUBLIC COMMENT: Appreciate what was shown but disappointed that the presentation did not show how this will actually change what happened because of redlining. Struggling to see how this addresses segregation & will wealthy families be able to cherry pick which zone they want?
