Earlier today I was part of an event on making online space safer for women. I spoke to women friends & asked them their views. And then it occurred to me that all suggestions were on what women can do. None on how we can get people to ensure they don’t make women feel insecure.
I mean what is being asked for online is simply what one expects in the physical space. In real life do you verbally assault women? Do you make sexual remarks? Do you make sexual threats? Why should the online space be different from the offline space?
Why should social media sites like Twitter and cops look the other? In India people think safety & privacy are glamorous topics unlike, let’s say, basic food and water seen as core issues. But are they really that different or lesser important?
An unsafe environment prevents everything for women. It discourages them from stepping out of home, looking for work, accepting a late night assignment. Public spaces include the digital space too. Women are penalised for asserting their identities, for speaking up.

Dear @PrakashJavdekar ji. Moved by your passionate defence of a free press let me bring to your attention instances when media freedom was trampled. And continues to be throttled. Perhaps you were too busy to notice so here is a thread. Am sure you will tweet on this too...
A CBI inquiry has been ordered in the #HathrasCase. For it to be a truly fair inquiry the following officers have to be questioned by the CBI. 1) DM Praveen Kumar. Not only should he be charged for threatening the family but also his role in destruction of evidence..
Did Praveen Kumar give orders for the hurried cremation? Doesn’t burning the victim’s body amount to destroying evidence? The threats given to the family was meant to influence the probe and get them to toe the govt line. Why was he trying to protect the rapists?
The second officer who needs to be questioned is DGP HC Awasthy. Like @brajeshlive says his phones need to be seized to see whether he had given instructions to the SP to burn the body hurriedly. Did he instruct ADG (L&O) to do a press conference to declare there was no rape?
Completely agree that rape shouldn’t be politicised. And here is how it shouldn’t be- A case should be registered earliest. Not ten days after the incident. The rape should not be dismissed as ‘fake news’ with threats to those who ask for justice because it spoils govt image...
The victim should be given the best possible medical care. If she unfortunately dies, her body should be handed over to her grieving parents. They should be allowed to cremate her according to their rituals. They should not be made to beg to see their daughter one last time....
Police action should be in favour of the victim and her family. Not to protect the image of the govt. The government is not the rapist so why does it feel reporting on rape is an attack on it?
It is never right to compare two rapes. But let’s compare how the Nirbhaya and the Hathras cases have been handled by two different govts. Nirbhaya was admitted in Safdarjung hospital. The head of the party in power Sonia Gandhi visited the family at the hospital....
Wide scale protests were held. Sonia Gandhi met the protestors. The Indian government flew Nirbhaya to Singapore for treatment. When her body was brought back a PM mocked for being soft spoken and the head of the ruling party were waiting at the airport to receive it.
Delhi police showed immense efficiency in cracking the case- a blind case at the time- and the rapists were all arrested. A new rape law was brought in. The same law that the current ADG, law and order in Uttar Pradesh, seems to know little about now it seems...
It’s not possible for any government in any part of the world to completely control crimes against women. The police cannot be present everywhere at all times. But it is possible for govts to respond strongly to these crimes when reported instead of dismissing them as ‘fake news’
It is possible for the police to immediately register a gang rape case instead of waiting for ten days. It is possible for the administration to ensure the best medical care to the brutally assaulted victim without bragging how care is ‘free of cost’ for the victim
It is possible for the administration to hand over the body to the grieving family. It is possible for the Chief Minister to have visited the family immediately instead of doing a video call weeks later because of national outrage.
