The guy from "Colorado Gun Owners For Safety" says he has a concealed carry permit... which Giffords wants to give police "full discretion" to approve or deny: giffords.org/lawcenter/gun-…
Don't think I've heard the phrase "common sense gun owners" before...
The guy from the Colorado group says they've testified for and against gun bills... what bills have they testified against? And were the bills supported or opposed by Giffords?
Hard to overstate how scripted nearly every part of this event feels
For a group who wants to "prevent gun violence while also supporting the Second Amendment", there's a lot of talk about passing gun control bills and not much talk about what they do to support the Second Amendment 🤔
Besides the random "hello fellow gun owners" lines, I don't see how this is different than a generic event supporting gun control.
The guy from Michigan says the state needs a "moderate" group because the state government is split between Democrats and Republicans... and then proceeds to complain about gerrymandering. Wants to make MI "the next big Giffords for Gun Safety state".
It seems like they're trying to have the appearance a question and answer format but everyone's lines seem written beforehand so it ends up sounding really strange.
Guy from Michigan: "And as responsible gun owners, we need to support those who protect and serve, and those who act to promote the public safety."
*Someone's cell phone starts ringing*
Woman from Colorado: "It's ridiculous that we don't have universal background checks at the federal level already."
"Here in Colorado, we've had universal background checks since 2013, and it's been great here."
Guy from CO: "If I can leave you with just one message today, let us vote for elected officials that are committed to sensible gun legislation, such as my friend and neighbor Jason Crow."
Video from Crow plays, where he says "assault weapons... have no place in our community."
Giffords Engagement Director: "We're trying to cultivate a group of individuals that are going to make it a safe space for common sense gun owners."
Giffords Engagement Director: "We know that if we build an infrastructure that is organized, that we can get those individuals involved, and then we can get the elected officials to do the right thing."
Giffords Engagement Director: "We're here to provide a safe space for diverse individuals who are gun owners to have relevant conversations about laws and legislation that's gonna actually affect their lives."
