THREAD w/ highlights from Cindy Hyde-Smith's interview today. Yes, this is the trainwreck you think it is.

The interview starts with asking Cindy why she refused to debate @MikeEspyMS and OMG this is awkward. 1/
Byron asked Cindy about her statement that the home of Jefferson Davis president of the Confederacy, is "Mississippi history at its best."

BYRON: "Is this really Mississippi's history at its best?"

CINDY: "It is displayed very well." 2/
The "civil unrest"?

Cindy refers to lynchings in Mississippi as "civil unrest." There's nothing civil about terrorism. 3/
BYRON: "Do you support a bill that would keep children under the age of 26 on their parents' health insurance?"

CINDY: "For people that can afford that, when they're in the position that they need affordable healthcare."

Huh? (Then Cindy lied about lowering drug costs.) 4/
"Do you think the president should have set an example of wearing a mask more often?"

Oh, Cindy not gonna talk smack about Trump. 😂 5/
Cindy should never speak about qualified immunity again. She is clearly too ill-informed to speak about it. 6/
Cindy opposes Initiative 65 and Initiative 65A because (a) law enforcement opposes it, (b) she believes the federal gov't should decide this issue for Mississippi, (c) people abuse opioids, and (d) illegal drugs come across the border.

Wow. 7/
Here is Cindy's complete interview with WJTV. Cindy's campaign has collapsed, and she knows it. 8/
If anyone wants to give Cindy the benefit of the doubt about whether Jefferson Davis is one of the pieces of MS's history that Cindy's "not proud of," please note that when Cindy was a state senator, she tried to name a highway in her county after Jefferson Davis. 9/ Image
I wanted Byron to ask Cindy who she refers to as "they" in this quote. Sadly, that question didn't get in.

"They remind me that there's a lot of liberal folks...who maybe we don't want to vote. Maybe we want to make it more difficult to vote. I think that's a great idea." 10/
For comparison, @MikeEspyMS also gave an interview yesterday. See below: 11/

Mike Espy outraised Cindy Hyde-Smith 45-to-1 in the pre-election period (October 1-14).

@MikeEspyMS: $3,879,256.02…

@cindyhydesmith: $84,477.01…
Cindy's 2018 donors are still waiting for $50,000+ worth of refunds they demanded when Cindy said "I'd be on the front row" for a public hanging and "it's a great idea" to make voting "more difficult."…
Keep the support flowing to Mike, everyone—Cindy couldn't even break six figures on her own, but Lord knows how much Trump raked in for her yesterday 😬…

THREAD: @aidachavez reports below on @cindyhydesmith's 1990s lobbying work for the health policies she now opposes, so...did @MikeEspyMS have a healthcare platform in the 1990s, you ask?

Why, yes he did! Espy's plan was basically rural Obamacare. 1/4
Espy noted that health insurance companies gouged agricultural workers and businesses on premiums because farming is a high-risk occupation and farmers had little or no opportunity to pool their risks. 2/4
Espy remarks about how the Clinton administration's health plan would meet rural needs apply fittingly to the guaranteed issue and community rating provisions ultimately passed into law in the ACA, that we all now rely on (and that Cindy wants to gut). 3/4

THREAD: @CindyHydeSmith claims that she refused to debate @MikeEspyMS because she is seeing constituents instead, but is she?

No. Instead, Cindy appeared with a Florida PR consultant in an event titled "The New American Civil War." 1/
This reporting comes from @LamarWhiteJr @bayoubrief.

Video of the host's introduction to the event is available here:… 2/…
After being introduced by the host, Naresh Vissa, Vissa asked Cindy about what she had done for Hindu Americans, and Cindy responded that she had hired Umesh Sanjanwala as her chief aide when she became MS agriculture commissioner.

That video is here:… 3/

THREAD: Cindy Hyde-Smith released a video today begging for money for her campaign against @MikeEspyMS for US senate.

Cindy's desperate plea follows the interview Cindy gave to WJTV last week where she embarrassed both herself and Mississippi (see below). 1/
Cindy is correct that Mike is outraising her (though to win, Mike needs enough funds for a GOTV operation to reach MS Democratic voters who became inactive voters since 2008 and to improve his margin of white voters by a hair). 2/
Indeed, @alfranken said yesterday on the @talkingfedspod with @harrylitman @BillKristol and @Slate's @Dahlialithwick that the GOP likely views Mississippi's race for US senate as being close enough to be decided by voter suppression, making Mike's ability to GOTV crucial. 3/
