Topic: Dislike for dynasty
It is difficult to say since when the media had these abnormalities as it goes deep back into several decades. It is not required to dig much into past history as we have enough instances to establish a common strain that is not normal. What our concern is, why does it happen?
/1
It is more or less true that the word dynasty creates goosebumps among ‘intellectuals’. We have enough of them in the media.

They acquire ‘intellectual calibre’ as they join media to ‘advocate and judge’ what is right and wrong.

Maybe they can now recruit judges from media.
/2
The dynasty question was visible after Nehru or to be exact after Lal Bahadur Shastri’s death.

Indira’s rise to the throne was pricking many of them. Merits, qualification, seniority, experience all came into question as Indira was called ‘Goongi gudiya’.
/3
Perhaps no one raised a dynasty question when Jawaharlal Nehru became a congress leader.

Nehru earned his position as a top leader on his own rights, merits. But his dynastic lineage can not be denied.

He also needed Gandhi’s endorsement, nomination to become Prime Minister.
/4
Indira Gandhi carrying an image of ‘Goongi gudiya’, was initially tentative but turned assertive and became an iron lady to disappoint many of the erstwhile leaders of the grand old party.

She overcame the challenges to her leadership, posed by her senior Congress leaders.
/5
The senior Congress leaders split the party, forming their group Congress(O); allied with Jana Sangh, Swatantra Party, SSP to form a grand National Democratic Front alliance.

Indira proved her abilities again when she won general elections in Mar 1971 against this alliance.
/6
Her handling of India Pakistan war in 1971 and the incredible win established that further.

Why then senior leaders and ‘intellectuals’ do not want to allow them time to prove themselves?

Maybe they are afraid of their popularity, brand name, family goodwill and sacrifices.
/7
If dynastic leaders could establish themselves, it is ‘unfair and improper’ as it is ‘misuse’ of family linkage, encashing their brand name;
they are jumping the queue denying others fair opportunities;
it does hurt their ‘much-overblown’ egos, pride and ambitions.
/8
Most of the times these ‘seniors and intellectuals’ do not express openly their reservations and opinion that these dynastic leaders are inferior in terms of intellect, experience in comparison to themselves,

They ignore their shortcomings to assume top leadership.
/9
Even the euphoria of big electoral victory and that of a spectacular win in Indo Pakistan war only a temporary adulation.

Indira Gandhi, the ‘Goddess Durga’ of politics in 1971 became an ‘autocrat’ in the eyes of her opponents, intellectuals, and media by 1975.

Topic: Media lacks vision
Here we have to mention that Mahatma Gandhi was the best and perfect political leader India, maybe the world ever had in recent history.

Jawaharlal Nehru could absorb many of his ideals with a modern, socialistic vision that suited our large sections of poor and downtrodden.
/1
It is not that we do not have people with such high qualities now. We are obstructing them to become one in our political arena due to our crab mentality with a negative, selfish bent of mind characterized by not allowing others to get ahead of or do better than oneself.

Perfectionism:

The job of the media is to gather information; present news and views to all. They also do raise questions to bring out facts. Sometimes by exercising this right, they presume that they are masters, judges, avatars to set right and establish a perfect universe.
/1
Searching and evolving perfection on any issue or system is a process. It may involve many individuals, groups of people from various sections of society, institutions.

Media also plays a part but do not get any superior knowledge or supernatural powers by questioning people.

Overreach:

No one including the media have complete control over information. They search for it on their own and raise questions to people concerned publicly or privately.

Many a time they jump to conclusions with incomplete information and present them as complete truth.
/1
For the evolution of solutions or arriving at the truth on any issue, there has to be right kind of analysis, debate, discussions which includes being receptive to information, ideas with an open bent of mind to admit errors of judgement and modify one’s thinking/ opinion.

Causation:

A professional media is to raise questions about executive misconduct and also to search for truth behind all issues that are matters of public concern as part of media’s social responsibility.

This does not happen if media develops prejudices and mental blocks.
/1
We, Indians, love the concept of peaceful coexistence. But still, we are a diverse society not yet fully liberated from the deep divisions based on caste, religion, language, region and also innumerable subgroups of every kind existing within it.

Pattern:

If we look at the media’s failures, weaknesses, silences, actions, inactions deeply, there appears to be at the root a pattern emerging in their behaviour, character.

One may note such conspicuous absence of media even in case of recent Delhi riots to unravel truth.
/1
They are not occasional, incidental let-downs or failings. it appears to be due to a characteristic approach they are habituated to adopt due to their prejudices and bias.

The course correction required for such basic abnormalities needs deeper analysis of past and present.

Avoidance:

We do get satisfied if the media speaks our voice, say of an educated middle-class citizen reflecting our views.

Is that enough? This is not what is expected of them.

A deeper analysis and understanding of the characters and subjects involved is required.
/1
A closer reading of the issues and associated individuals or groups, their minds, character, behaviour will lead to a predictable line of their approach, the games they play and the strategies they hold or will unfold in future. This will help in our defence and response.
