what i wish leftists knew: disability is both a physical experience and an economic status. it announces how well your body can perform under capitalism. it is forced poverty--ppl recognized by the govt as disabled & on SSI can never possess more than $2,000 in their name
think about what that means. never buying a car. never being able to put first last and security on an apartment. never having the funds for a wheelchair. not just because you are poor: because you are forced to be poor as punishment.
under capitalism our bodies are reduced to what we can produce, & disabled ppl fail to meet work expectations.(40+ hrs a week! constant standing/ sitting/ walking! high level cognitive thinking!) so we are thrown out & hidden away, left w/o help or in forced poverty as punishment
being hidden away is a death sentence. did you know half of all people killed by police have a disability? HALF. they are usually Black & disabled.
did you know disabled people still do not have marriage equality? because SSI is so low, and marriage between 2 disabled people on SSI heavily cuts your benefits, two disabled people cannot get married and live.
please center disability in your work wherever you can--they experience the horrors of capitalism every day in forced poverty. they need mutual aid & support to live. their lives show the contradictions of capitalism. their vision is essential to building a better world
