Next up get ready for important tweet-ucation from “Cultural Diversity - Being Me: Understanding ‘Otherness’ and Issues of Diversity”! #CHEST2020
Our moderator is Dr. Chima-Melton (@ChimaMelton). We will start with Dr. Hassan Bencheqroun (@DrBCalifornia) talking about how assumptions are dangerous! #CHEST2020
When you have assumptions about a person and you act on those you no longer have a relationship with the person - you have a relationship with your assumptions. #CHEST2020
Dr. Demondes Haynes (@DemondesHaynes) is talking now about what it's like to be a black man in a white coat. #CHEST2020
When people assume that you aren't a med student or a doctor it leads to you starting to question whether you really belong there.
It's on you to correct people when you hear them making mistakes and assumptions like that. #CHEST2020
Dr. Kim French speaks about her experience being the woman in the room (or rather the woman NOT in the room). #CHEST2020
A million women across the globe have left the workforce during this pandemic. This will create lasting problems in advancing women and their careers. #CHEST2020
Having an ally in the room who calls out things when they see them can be invaluable. Women often don't feel like they can call things out themselves. #CHEST2020
When you see someone being disrespected or aggressions/microaggressions, reach out to them and check on them. Silence does not heal! #CHEST 2020
Next up is Dr. Mo Adrish (AdrishMD) telling part of his story as an immigrant from Pakistan! #CHEST2020
Imagine working so hard to help others and then you introduce yourself to a patient and hear, "Can I have an American doctor?" Or a "white" doctor or a "male" doctor. This is not okay. Stand up for your colleagues! #CHEST2020
@DrBCalifornia: Once you become an attending you have a platform to at on, but at that time he wasn't. The reason why it impacted him so much is it took away my voice. A person had an assumption that translated into an action that altered others' perceptions of him. #CHEST2020
@DemondesHaynes: He felt inadequate when others referred to him as the custodian instead of the doctor. The things people say do affect us and shake our confidence. Remind the people around you that they were chosen for a reason and they belong there! #CHEST2020
Dr. French: When she spoke on a conference call someone who wasn't muted spoke up and said, "Ugh, this girl." No one said anything and no one reached out to her afterward. She said it sensitized her to people's perceptions of her.
@AdrishMD: When a patient judged him for his nationality he thought that the people on his team who witnessed it could use it as a learning moment. Whatever type of meanness you encounter you can react with grace. #CHEST2020
@NnekaPhD: How can you use your power and authority to help move the conversation forward? How do we help develop allyship? #CHEST2020
@DrBCalifornia: When you see someone, check in with them. When you see something that doesn't seem right, stop and walk with the person. #CHEST2020
@DrBCalifornia: Speak up about your experiences and your accomplishments. Be proud of them. You are representation for others. #CHEST2020
"If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." ~Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu #CHEST2020
