In the wake of 4.5 million child care slots at risk, the challenges of remote schooling, and more than 55,000 nursing home residents’ deaths due to COVID-19, voters will be casting their ballots with an urgent issue top of mind: our nation’s dire caregiving crisis.
The pandemic has left women at a breaking point. This fall, nearly three-quarters of people (72 percent) who are caring for a child or older adult said their responsibilities increased as a result of the pandemic. caringacross.org/wp-content/upl…
At the same time, millions of women in low-wage jobs are risking their lives and the health and safety of their loved ones while dealing with unstable or nonexistent child care arrangements.
Employers are now also coming to realize the effect of this national caregiving crisis on their workplaces. Nearly half of manufacturers said child-care constraints made it difficult to recall furloughed workers or hire new ones in August 2020. wsj.com/articles/manuf…
Care policies were already gaining political traction before the pandemic but they are even more urgent today. Nearly 3/4 of voters overwhelmingly support: child care, paid family & medical leave and paid sick days, and better support for paid caregivers. caringacross.org/wp-content/upl…

@lbaris "Time’s up on sexual harassment in all work places, time’s up on blaming survivors, time’s up on empty apologies without consequences, and time’s up on the pervasive culture of silence that has enabled abusers like Weinstein.” — @RoArquette
@lbaris@RoArquette "Know this: we are free, we are beautiful, we are strong. And you will never take that from us. Most importantly, know that the Silence Breakers will never give up. Survivors will never give up.” — @Rosemcgowan
