On 20th Aug'47,Sikh officer,Major O S Kalawat, stumbled upon Pakistan Army’s malicious & meticulous plan to illegally annex the princely state of J&K.The plan, called Operation Gulmarg, was to invade J&K using Pashtun tribal warriors armed & led by Pakistani army officers #22OCT1947
Operation Gulmarg entailed recruitment of 1000s of Pashtun tribesmen who were armed at the brigade headquarters at Bannu, Wanna, Peshawar, Kohat, Thall and Nowshera & were then transferred to the Abottabad launchpad. The D-day to attack Jammu & Kashmir was 22nd Oct’ 47 #22OCT1947
This plan was detailed in a telegram marked "Personal/Top Secret" addressed to Brigadier C P Murray from Pakistan Army's Commander in Chief,General Messervy, another British officer.Major Kalawat serving at HQ Bannu as Brigade Major under Brigadier Murray chanced upon the letter
The Lashkars (each containing 1000 Pashtun tribesmen) were to be provided a Major, a Captain, 10 JCOs of the regular Pakistan Army. The entire force was to be commanded by Major General Akbar Khan, who was given the code name Tariq. He was to be assisted by Brigadier Sher Khan.
The letter was conclusive proof of Pakistan Army’s direct involvement in the attack on J&K on 22nd Oct’47 that is being erroneously termed as ‘Kabali raids'. Evidently, top British officers were privy to this info but kept Maharaja Hari Singh & the Indian establishment in dark.
Sardar Shaukat Hayat Khan in his book ‘The Nation that Lost It’s Soul’ has revealed that Major Akbar Khan had conceived ‘Operation Gulmarg’ in the year 1947. This had pleased Jinnah and the then PM Liaquat Ali Khan so much that Akbar Khan was made advisor to the PM on 28 Oct
Consequently, Pakistan had also mischievously imposed an economic blockade on J&K despite receiving payments for the imports from the state. People suffered considerable hardships. On 15th Oct Maharaja had written to British PM to advise Pakistan to treat Kashmir with fairness
The above incidents underline Pakistan’s obsession with J&K that it has been eyeing since its inception. The situation was so critical that Maharaja sought military aid on 'any terms'. Mehr Chand Mahajan has vividly documented the events in his book ‘Looking Back’ #22OCT1947
