hard-pivoting into ai research the best experiment i ran was only following ai researchers. Suddenly practically every tweet was a paper link

if you want to be happier maybe only follow the 10 happiest people you know of? Twitter might suddenly feel very sunny! Can always revert
people I suggest following if you want to try this! Hmm @noampomsky @kehwho maybe @patrickc too?
definitely follow @noampomsky even if you aren't doing this though. Her reward system is broken, allowing her to see magic in everything, and I highly suggest breaking yourself in the same way

there's millions of people hanging out at this party and some of them are bound to be in the 0.0001% happiness bracket, happier than anyone you'll ever meet. With one click you can commit to stuff your brain with their thoughts, slightly merging them with you. How cool is that!!
other suggestions of people that make my life sunny @jacknasjaq @saffronhuang @uncatherio @metaLulie
I'd actually love to see a RCT of Prozac against spending an hour a day reading the random ruminations of the happiest people on here

Wouldn't be surprised if information diet is a much bigger impact than messing blindly with serotonin (screenshot from a quick messenger search)
actually if someone could assemble a twitter list and really put a lot of effort into making it good I'd be very grateful and retweet you and send you big emojis I think it could do a lot of good in the world
I'll actually pay $200 for a list I'm really excited about bc I think this may be effective philanthropy. Def doable in < 10 hours, great hs/college project. Suggestion: recursively dm happy people ask for happiest twitters they know. Ideal list = ~50-100 people
btw anyone reading this place just braindump anyone you know that might be good for the list as a reply to this, at minimum it can be a starting point for the wonderful person that decides to take on this project ☀️

After a few years of reading the scientific literature and brewing on it myself I couldn’t be less confident about awareness and basically what’s really going on in the universe. Being merely 95% confused seems impossibly far away
behold my intellectual bounty from thousands of hours of thinking: causality may be important, maybe?
until someone tells me what's really going on I choose to believe the fundamental unit of the universe is kisses 😘

going down street or at stoplights I’m usually dancing and like half of days I notice a backseat teen smiling and recording me and I wish I could see a big collage of all of these snapchats and whatever over the last 10y (happened twice this coffee run)
also the correlation between how much I notice that I’m autodancing and my previous night’s HRV is crazy. Under 60 no dancing, > 100 it’s just excessive and annoying even to me
propranolol kills the natural urge to dance :( alcohol increases but it gets too much v easily and I fall over, phenibut increases it, makes me auto start conversations with random people walking by me on the street

@Oatmeal hey, I mostly love your work but I find theoatmeal.com/comics/unhappy a bit dangerous. It portrays negative hedonic tone and suggests feeling happy most or all of the time for “no reason” isn’t possible, which is not correct
Most people have positive baselines and it's possible to go from quite negative baseline to happy almost all the time. Communicating this has downsides, but I think the hope is net-positive. Happy to talk through ways to communicate this safely if you’re open to it! (DMs open)
roughly, if someone has low mood they know it. They won’t raise it unless they know they can change it, and many people don’t. Telling the truth and giving them hope, showing them how high the ceiling goes, can motivate the work necessary to get there. Hiding it isn’t helping

So crazy to me how hardcore we are alcohol < 21. We’ll happy screw with the most important neurotransmitters (dopamine amphetamines, snri, serotonin norepinephrine) in kids but alcohol no way

Let the kids get drunk now and then Image
I’m not even talking glass of wine at dinner, I mean like go nuts have a party. Teach then about alcohol poisoning and sexual consent

I’d be far more concerned if my kid spent time around friends that weren’t kind than if they drank even once a week
Sorry for typos it’s cold out in Utah and my fingers are refusing to accept my suggestions for where they should go

Waking up to this made me feel very loved. If you have even a tiny desire to call out someone you like, esp if they have < 500 followers, please do it!

The world is chronically undercomplimented. When I was 14 Stephen Fry said like 3 nice words about me and I was high for years
The last person I recd was @czgate and I stand by it. But I need more great unknown people who else should I follow and hopefully end up calling out too
a few weeks after Stephen Fry’s tiny complement on a talk show I asked my crush out and she said “Youre amazing but let me go ask Jack out first bc he’s SUPER hot and if he says no I might be down!” and honestly Stephen’s 3 words were all that kept me from the abyss

@sam_havens how on earth have I never seen this before thanks so much for referencing it
@sam_havens Some of this doc is too woo for me but I totally agree that in most cases you actually don’t want to start with a therapist (having on at the ready is good tho)
@sam_havens just to be clear I don’t actually have a good proposed new protocol, I just think experimenting there is a high point of leverage for working on 3, and much easier than drug development
