Just started this NXVM doc and...ain’t this just Scientology?
Switched to Seduced

This man supposed to be one of the three smartest people in the world but lived in Albany, NY

Smh
An aside but it makes sense that these schemes target rich actor types: they’re monied, have time to kill, and importantly...not a lot of formal education?
These are “executive skill programs” but the business actors are in is literally selling themselves.

And as @rjcc said, the whiteness of these groups ain’t coincidental either. Could be the initiation fees, but maybe it’s also about independence vs interdependence?
I guess “these groups” should be “this group”: the ppl who died in Jonestown were mostly Black.
the fees thing and the in/interdependence thing are both about personal wealth: Who can afford to join? But also: who might m be the kind of alienated/seeker type who can afford to *live* with the attenuated familial/social connections that makes NXVM such a seductive option?
This. Just functionally and ideologically, that kind of social independence is going to be less available to some than others.

(Sorry, it was @jason_patterson who made the point abt how white NXVM was. Don’t tweet before 7, y’all.)

fuck it. i'm just sitting in this hospital waiting room killing time. let's do it, then.

as DA of SF, KH's signature reform program – she called it a "personal responsibility program," which pretty clearly illustrates the respectabilty thing — was called Back on Track.
to participate in BoT, which was meant to be divert people who had been arrested away from incarceration, people had to accept a plea deal. Harris underlined this a lot — she said we're not gonna pretend you're not a criminal, so you need to accept responsibility for your actions
the stipulation was: we'll expunge that felony conviction from your record once you complete BoT — which included job training, housing support, literacy help and other things — under supervision from the DA's office.

And BoT worked pretty well for the people who completed it.

He’s immune.
This is bad.
Biden lives in a basement.

He also has a Twitch channel where he takes donations for his speedruns of classic NES games.

Back in the early summer when white people were suddenly realizing that the US has, you know, a certain malign track record, i asked what spurred their epiphanies.

Of the hundreds of responses, nearly all mentioned Trump. The Great Awokening was always a flimsy, cynical thing.
People disliked Trump. They were holed up in their houses, maybe feeling unease about their financial situation or their safety.

state violence against Black people was a ready, accessible way for them to channel their outrage.
It’s pretty clear now that they might have latched on to anything they saw as sufficiently unjust.

We asked back then: if Trump is the thing fueling their anger, what happens to all this newfound activist energy if he’s no longer around?

This video, specifically, is the most irritating thing on the Internet
This whole genre of Tiktok trend is weird

Literally dozens of couples re-enacting the same “cutesy” scene, almost verbatim

The other bad one is the one where the woman (the viral ones are all het) gets “upset” when her boo calls her by her real name instead of her pet name 🙄
It’s so cringe

“Bae, like...you never call me by my *real* name? Why did you do that?”

is that what was said? 🤔

talented tenth except in comprehension, i guess
there were many chewy things in that ep and it is incredibly revealing that ppl in an elite Black organization took issue with the 20 seconds in which their org is referred to as an elite Black organization that has not primarily concerned itself with radical politics
it's not editorializing to say those organizations are for the Black bourgeoisie, that their politics are deeply informed by and concerned with respectability, and that they necessarily self-select for people so inclined.
