.@TonyJuniper: "We’ve seen a significant reduction in the capacity to monitor Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Between 2010-17 our budget available was cut in half, leading to longer intervals between site visits and therefore less confidence in the state of those habitats."

Anne Larigauderie, @IPBES: "We need to be able to follow and assess, and for that we must monitor and measure. Any new framework post-2020 needs to be accompanied by countries monitoring their biodiversity."

.@AndyPurvisNHM: "If we delay conserving habitats for another decade, 50,000 further species will be lost"

Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias: "The pandemic is a direct consequence of the destruction of nature and illegal wildlife trade. The cost to this pandemic alone could be 10% of Global GDP...[cont]

[cont]...The conservation of nature and control of wildlife trade could cost 100-1000 times less than the cost of this one pandemic. Investing in nature will pay us back."

.@katenorgrove: "In tackling #ClimateChange there is a broadly accepted way to meet our goals and we are on the path to achieve that. The same cannot be said for nature. There is no global goal... [cont]

[cont]...The post-2020 framework needs to include a goal for nature, a mission statement so we do for nature what we are trying to do for the climate."

Prof Elisa Morgera "We need to realise biodiversity is essential to basic human rights- rights to life, food and water. To respect human rights we need to respect biodiversity and build more alliances with human rights groups. A human rights approach can lead to more inclusion."

Prof Elisa Morgera "Access and benefits sharing brings to the forefront how important a global partnership to tackle biodiversity is and where we've seen the most push back from countries. We need to share lessons learnt, share practice and improve research structures"
