Start with the quick 30 min episodes from “Philosophize This!”
From the beginning-ish, with some meandering paths. I’m loving the sense of time and evolution of thought this provides.
If I’m intrigued by a collection of ideas, I search broadly for more sources.
This week I sought to understand “Machiavellian” ideas from the Prince and Discourses on Livy.
I’ve always liked wrestling with concepts of morality — this was fun.
Next, I ended up learning a brief overview of Socrates.
Wow. That was awesome. And will likely be my next rabbit hole.
The story of “The Apology”/trial was incredible.
Amazing to learn to roots of the Socratic method and scientific method.
Jaw dropping, really.
Learning some Socrates and Plato essentials today — and realized I use the Socratic method all the time! But I didn’t really have a good definition for it.
When in conversation, I like to talk “around” something, without directly sharing my knowledge... using questions...
To elicit commentary from whoever I’m talking with.
I do this to avoid bias and group think, and to see if they arrive at similar conclusions — and amend my ideas depending on their thoughts.
And we usually end up creating new ideas together. Using questions to dig deeper.
I guess that’s the Socratic method. Hmm. Cool.
@calhistorian I’m starting to see how this relates to your teaching style.
