Two MSM headlines this week are calling out for a Thread🧵. TL;DR: The shifting 2020 electoral map isn’t weird or an accident, it’s because of a fast-growing young and multiracial majority that, despite its unbelievable power, is often ignored by campaign spending & the story.
First, this: nytimes.com/interactive/20…, could be renamed the Relentless Centering of Whiteness.
This one chart in the NYT article explains why @waytowinaf centered AZ, GA, FL, NC & yes TX which isn’t even listed but would blow away the base-expansion potential Nos., and call into question why IA is even on this list. These are the states that are driving political change.
These were the trends we've tracked since 2017 when we saw clearly that the growth in Democratic power was being fueled by states in the South and Southwest, places where up until now many big donors and party leaders ignored. Here’s a slide from Way to Win’s very first deck:
And then there’s this one: washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/…
It’s not "weird," as put by Wapo, that TX and GA are at the top of the list as battlegrounds. It’s the result of a 5-yr base expansion strategy, including supporting local leaders of color and young leaders to organize people not just right before an election, but every day.
What is "weird" is that states in the midwest that are getting older and whiter are flipping to Biden because of a once-in-a-generation global pandemic that turned the 65+ vote on its head.
New voters taking on their power where they live is here to stay-- and will accelerate with population growth and continued diversification of demographics in the South and Southwest.
So why is it that with all this data, DC conventional wisdom still doesn't believe that Texas and Georgia are swing states worthy of early focus, early money, and the sustained investments of a traditional swing state?
This is how the system centers whiteness. /End
