Reading Churchill on Stalin's betrayal of the Poles during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, it is impossible not to share his anger. His account of events as they unfolded, giving the context for this quote from Sept 4th 1944, follow in the thread. #WarsawUprising
The Soviets (and now Russians) deny they deliberately provoked the Warsaw Poles to rise up - with the intention of engineering the destruction of all those who might form a post-war anti-communist resistance. WSC was in no doubt that was Stalin's intention.
The Soviets refuse to have anything to do with the beleaguered Poles, the 'adventure in Warsaw' or help the Allies who need Soviet refuelling facilities to drop munitions and food.
WSC: Soviet obstruction will result in "wholesale massacre". That of course was their aim.
By late Aug, the situation is becoming desperate. WSC and Roosevelt appeal again to Stalin. He replies that the Warsaw fighters are a "group of criminals".
Sept 4th 1944: It's now obvious Stalin's actions are intentional. The cabinet are united in anger. The reason why Attlee and Bevin, present then & soon to be post war Labour PM & For Sec , were so hostile to the USSR & pro-Soviets in their party, must lie in events such as these
Oct 2nd 1944: The end.
It's sickening to read. A crime against humanity. For Poland it was not an end to the suffering, but the beginning of a new chapter of it. Stalin, revealed in all his evil, covering for his failure in the 1920 Soviet/Polish war, had had his revenge.
Today 4pm candles will be lit to commemorate the #Holomodor of 1932-33, Stalin's enforced starvation of Ukraine. 5m+ died. In 1932, USSR exported 1.73m tonnes of grain, 1.68m in 1933 when reserves were 1.8m tonnes. Human life counts for little when building the Communist utopia.
As Orwell put it - 'there's something wrong with a regime that requires a pyramid of corpses every few years ... All people who are morally sound have known since 1931 that the Russian regime stinks.'
But British pro-Soviet enthusiasts denied anything really serious was going on.
The denials by Sidney & Beatrice 'Stalin is no dictator' Webb, Labour heroes, founders of the LSE & New Statesmen were brazen lies - but they were duped. They passed their text to the Sov. Embassy in London for editing 🤦♂️This page is from my book about to be reprinted #Holomodor
And how…
So much of my research mirrors this. One influential speech last year to a group of British Caribbean-origin churches in U.K. inflaming them against the CofE was based on so many sheer inventions, I cannot let it pass. 1/
Honestly I’d be the last to defend the CofE on so many grounds but Prof Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor of the Uni of West Indies, leader of the Caricom reparations campaign, & an eminent knighted historian, accused the CofE of the following serious charges, all untrue: 2/
1. The CofE “was one of the largest slave owners in Barbados”
- At emancipation there were 83,000 slave on Barbados, just 411 on the estate left to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. (Not excusable but context important see no 10 below) 3/
Arthur Koestler on the psychology of conversion. Be it Corbynism, Critical race theory 'antiracism', XR, Nazism or Communism, once the convert has 'seen the light', life takes on meaning. And the fear of losing that deafens the new recruit to all challenges to his new faith.
An intellectually closed word... a universal method of thought ... a cure for all that ails man ... which deprives him of his critical faculties.
You cannot bring a convert back to reality by objective argument. Just five minutes of Twitter proves that.
All doubts and questions are dispelled by the prophet or his lieutenants. Questioning disciples are rebuffed with argument that their thought processes are still contaminated by the world outside. Objective reasoning becomes impossible: truth is now whatever the cult says it is.
Communism wants destroy the traditional family. Its love & mutual loyalty hinders the advance of the socialist collective society. It must redirect that love to the state.
Don’t believe me? Here is Trotsky & another Soviet writer from the 1920s (my thread has more quotes)
Martyn Liadov, rector of the Sverdlov Communist University: “Is it possible to bring up collective man in an individual family? No. The sooner the child is taken from his mother and given over to a public nursery the greater is the guarantee that he will be healthy.” (1925)
Zina Zinovieva, pioneer of Soviet education, wife of leading Bolshevik Grigory Z: “We must rescue children from the harmful influence of family life ... we must nationalise them.
To oblige the mother to give her child to the Soviet state - that is our task”
