Did you know the Texas Railroad Commission has nothing to do with railroads? It's a regulatory board for the oil & gas industry!
There's a Commissioner seat up for grabs and it's being dubbed "The Country’s Most Important Climate Election"! newrepublic.com/article/158981…
.@ChrystaForTexas would be the first Dem. elected to statewide office in TX since 1994.
She wants to crack down on the practice of "flaring" - burning off unwanted natural gas - which is happening more now than at any point since the 1950s, releasing enormous amounts of methane.
"While drillers are forbidden from flaring after their first 10 days of operations, a report last year found that the sitting commissioners issued exemptions for drillers that allowed $750 million worth of natural gas to be burned off through flaring in a single year."
In 2008, the RRC granted 100 exception permits for flaring.
In 2019, they granted nearly 7,000 permits!
"This particular position is our best opportunity to get a handle on one of the biggest contributors to climate gases nationwide." -@ChrystaForTexas
