WEDNESDAY #COVID19Colorado update

Headline: "State hits 7% positivity as hospitalizations make largest one-day jump since first week of April"

HOSPITALIZATIONS
(covid+ ONLY)

Today: 596 (up 58 from yesterday)
Last week: 435

We haven't seen a jump like this in months

POSITIVITY

Welp. Just hit 7% today in the 7-day average

(note testing numbers down for second day in a row -- green and yellow bars) Image
CASES

When will we see a crest?

Not today. That's for sure. Image
Look at this

(few places in eastern half of state immune from this latest wave) Image
Should note... today we hit more than 100K cases since the start of this.

The tone has certainly shifted now. I'm guessing many of you are starting to hear of people you know having positive cases.

I know I am. The summer lull is over. It's roaring again,
So... any reason for optimism in all of this?

Maybe...

So I get it... deaths lag... weeks past case count rise

BUT

Since the end of June, deaths have remained flat.

Averaging 4-6 a day (NOT INSIGNIFICANT, mind you)

But clearly, we have learned ways to better treat this. Image
Ideally it stays this way.

But as ICUs start to fill, it will put even more pressure on hospitals with limited staff.
Bottom line.

Wish I had better news. Ideally I've built up some cred when, a few months ago, things were quite calm and I didn't hesitate to tell you that.

Today things are moving quickly. Today's positivity and hospital counts are concerning.
So... what to do?

Treat this as if it's as real as it's been in months.

Don't panic, but don't act like any crowd you're in comes with zero risk

There are more infections taking place, and with that comes risk.
We're all going to feel the pinch with this latest wave.

As always... be safe... stay informed.

And take care of yourself. Both mentally and physically.

Peace

THREAD on mask use

Yes... I know...

But...

Let's take a look at Adams County. Remember Adams. It's moving to Safer Level 3 today because of, in part, high incidence rates.
Adams is clearly having a problem with cases. More so than Arapahoe (red) and Douglas (blue)

This comes from TriCounty Health
I think the simplistic thought might be...

well... maybe they're not wearing masks enough...

BUT... fortunately for the purposes of this thread, TriCounty has spent weeks analyzing mask use by trying to count, observationally, mask use.

This is going to get a bit messy.

JUST IN -- @MayorHancock announces Denver will fall back to Safer at Home "Level 3" as Denver experiences sustained rise in cases, positivity and hospitalizations.

Blames those who refuse to believe in science for this.

#9news
To get back to Level 2... Denver must hold lower numbers for two weeks.

This could last "a little while"

Vote centers NOT impacted by this.
"this isn't fear mongering" says Hancock

"A lot of people have put in a lot of hard work," he says. "Businesses have faced a lot of hardships... people's livelihoods are at risk... because some people didn't take this seriously"

Ok... let's do this.

Mitch here just said something I hear a lot from people

"If you are under 34, you have relatively the same chance of dying from lightning"

So let's look at the data
Last year, the National Weather Service reported 20 people died in the US from lightning

Of those 20...

11 were 34 or younger.

Eleven

Remember that number.

Eleven.

weather.gov/safety/lightni…
Now let's look at COVID deaths of people 34 and under.

Fortunately for us, CDC breaks that down here

Since March, CDC reports 2060 people 34 and under have died from COVID

Remember that number.

Two thousand and sixty.

Few things to note...

This is NOT a lockdown.

But it will impact your life in Denver.

I have highlighted a few of the bigger changes
Schools?

Under level 3... it's recommended that schools (higher ed and k-12) move to hybrid or remote only

Note... this is a recommendation.

Up to school districts to decide.

Currently, in Denver, K-5 has in-school learning available.
