Re speculation about lockdown in England -
1/ Prevalence of the virus is currently lower in Scotland than in other parts of the UK and there are early signs that the tough restrictions in place since we moved quickly in late September have started to slow the rate of increase...
2/ We will base decisions on circumstances here - though what happens just across our border is clearly not irrelevant to our considerations. In coming days @scotgov will consider data on the spread of the virus, as we always do, and take account of any developments in England...
3/ Amongst other factors, this consideration will have to include whether any financial support will be available now as a result of steps in England, which would not be guaranteed to Scotland later.
4/ Most importantly, we urge everyone to comply with current restrictions, including on travel. People should not travel to or from level 3 areas in Scotland and for now, we are asking people not to travel to or from England at all, except for essential purposes.
5/ Above all, we will do our best - in difficult circumstances - to arrive at the best and most rational decisions we can, with the priority of protecting health and lives. And we will set out any decisions to the Scottish people and @ScotParl in as managed a way as possible.

1/ I was heartbroken to learn this morning of the passing of Sir Sean Connery. Our nation today mourns one of her best loved sons.
bbc.co.uk/news/entertain…
2/ Sean was born into a working class Edinburgh family and through talent & sheer hard work, became an international film icon and one of the world's most accomplished actors
3/ Sean will be remembered best as James Bond - the classic 007 - but his roles were many & varied. He was a global legend but, first and foremost, a patriotic and proud Scot - his towering presence at the opening of @ScotParl in 1999 showed his love for the country of his birth.

1/ A shout out to everyone - in all parties - standing for s/election to @ScotParl for the first time. You will face abuse on here - especially if you have the temerity to be a woman and/or from one of our BAME communities. But stand strong and don’t be silenced...
2/ Bullies are cowards and that’s just as true on social media as it is in real life. By putting yourself forward, you are already showing more guts than any keyboard warrior hurling abuse.
3/ And to my fellow ‘old timers’ in politics - we should have the backs of those who are not as inured to it as we are, and call out abuse on here when we see it, even when it’s from our own ‘side’. Disagreement is what democracy is all about - vile, toxic abuse is not.

1/ There will always be fluctuations in daily figures - that’s why we look at 7 day averages to balance out variations in testing etc. Even with that caveat though, today’s report underlines fact that COVID is rising. @scotgov is considering over w/e what further action is needed
2/ Given serious situation across UK, I have also asked again that a 4 nations COBR meeting takes place over next 48 hours. While each of the 4 UK nations will reach our own decisions - rightly and properly - it makes sense to seek as much co-ordination and alignment as possible
3/ We know from experience earlier in the year that speed and decisiveness of action is important in the fight against COVID, so @scotgov will seek to reach considered decisions as quickly as possible, and I will update as usual through my daily briefings

1/ COVID is on the rise again across the UK and Europe. Keeping it under control requires care and vigilance from all of us. And bluntly, it means restricting as far as possible our interactions with other households. So I am asking everyone to follow some important advice....
2/ If - as I do - you live in Glasgow, East or West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, North or South Lanarkshire, please do not visit other households at all for now (unless providing care). Cases are rising fastest in central belt so we must be extra vigilant here
3/ In the rest of the country, please limit social gatherings, indoors and outdoors, to 6 people from a maximum of 2 households (children under 12 don’t count towards the limit of 6)...

1/ Regrettable but necessary in light of sharply rising numbers that restrictions on indoor household gatherings require to be continued for a further week in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire, and extended to Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire...
2/ Our public health advice is that the most significant - though not the only - driver of transmission continues to be household gatherings, large and small. And it is in these gatherings, rather than pubs, that older & more vulnerable people may be at greater risk of infection
3/ However, close attention will be paid over next few week to hospitality and, in the meantime, the councils involved will step up engagement and, if necessary, enforcement to ensure rules being complied with

1. Cases per 100k a factor we take into account - and it is often quoted - but it’s not only one. We also look at test positivity rate. And rely on analysis of public health experts as to whether there is clearly identifiable source of outbreak/potential community transmission
2. If, eg, you have high rate per 100k in an area but confidence that it’s associated with identified outbreaks that are being contained, wider restrictions may not be necessary. This was case recently in Tayside/Coupar Angus food processing plant outbreak.../
3. Heightened concern in @NHSGGC - particularly 3 affected council areas - is that cases appear to be linked to multiple, smaller unconnected clusters with potential community transmission, hence need for wider restrictions to stem spread.../
