1/ COVID is on the rise again across the UK and Europe. Keeping it under control requires care and vigilance from all of us. And bluntly, it means restricting as far as possible our interactions with other households. So I am asking everyone to follow some important advice....
2/ If - as I do - you live in Glasgow, East or West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, North or South Lanarkshire, please do not visit other households at all for now (unless providing care). Cases are rising fastest in central belt so we must be extra vigilant here
3/ In the rest of the country, please limit social gatherings, indoors and outdoors, to 6 people from a maximum of 2 households (children under 12 don’t count towards the limit of 6)...
4/ Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, remember FACTS -

🇫Face coverings in enclosed spaces
🇦Avoid crowded places
🇨Clean hands and surfaces regularly
🇹Two metre distancing from people in other households
🇸Self isolate and book a test if you have symptoms
5/ By following these steps, we all play our part in protecting Scotland. It’s tough but it’s necessary. We are all in this together - and only together can we control COVID and save lives. Thank you 🙏

1. Cases per 100k a factor we take into account - and it is often quoted - but it’s not only one. We also look at test positivity rate. And rely on analysis of public health experts as to whether there is clearly identifiable source of outbreak/potential community transmission
2. If, eg, you have high rate per 100k in an area but confidence that it’s associated with identified outbreaks that are being contained, wider restrictions may not be necessary. This was case recently in Tayside/Coupar Angus food processing plant outbreak.../
3. Heightened concern in @NHSGGC - particularly 3 affected council areas - is that cases appear to be linked to multiple, smaller unconnected clusters with potential community transmission, hence need for wider restrictions to stem spread.../

1. New restrictions have come into effect in Glasgow City, West Dunbartonshire & East Renfrewshire. I know residents in these areas - I am one - feel frustrated and are wondering why we have done X and not Y...so I thought it would be helpful to set out some of the rationale...
2. The virus is spreading again - in the West of Scotland especially - and the rise in cases in these 3 areas is a particular concern. Given the toll we know COVID can take, doing nothing is not an option. However, Test & Protect now allows us to be more targeted in what we do...
3. Our data suggests that spread in and between households is driving much of the transmission just now. That doesn’t mean there are no cases in pubs etc - but unlike in Aberdeen, pub clusters don’t appear, at this stage, to be main driver. That analysis has guided decisions...

1. Just chaired @scotgov Resilience meeting attended by @NHSGGC @GlasgowCC @EastRenCouncil @WDCouncil. Given concern in these 3 council areas about rapidly rising #COVID cases - and on clinical advice - new restrictions will apply from midnight tonight..../
2. People living in Glasgow City, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire Councils should not visit other people’s houses (wherever they are). Exceptions are emergencies, caring for vulnerable people or people in ‘extended households’.../
3. In these 3 areas, if someone in a household is identified as a close contact of a positive case, the whole household of the contact will be asked to isolate for 14 days. Councils will make arrangements for essential welfare support..../

I know this is an anxious time. As FM, I want to assure you that @scotgov is and will continue to take all possible steps. Right now, we are
🤒 asking people with mild symptoms - fever or persistent cough - to STAY AT HOME
📞 @NHS24 only if symptoms worsen
#CoronaVirusThread 2/
👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 We are issuing guidance that events of 500 people or more should be cancelled from Monday - this helps reduce pressure on emergency services
🧼 We are also asking everyone to help reduce spread by washing your hands properly. This really matters!
#CoronaVirusThread 3/
Other steps - including closing schools - will be kept under daily review and taken if and when it is judged they will delay spread and protect the most vulnerable. We are being guided by expert advice. Our priority is to protect the public and save lives.

📚 I love reading - it gives me a lot of joy and helps with the stresses and strains of work. I try (tho don’t always succeed) to get through a book every week or two. And at Xmas, I love sharing the novels I’ve enjoyed during the year, so I hope you’ll indulge me 😁...1/
First up, crime fiction (loose term, I know)...2/
Next, general fiction part one...3/

1/ A thread on our call for a general election. Firstly, we have to ask ourselves what the alternative is. Doing nothing allows Johnson to get his bad deal through (with Lab support) or, even worse, run down clock to end January when no deal becomes a real risk all over again
2/ Re a People’s Vote, I’ve strongly supported that and @theSNP would vote for it - but there’s no evidence that the majority for it exists within this Parliament. And if there is an extension to Jan 31, the clock starts ticking again immediately. We have no time to waste.
3/ For all his bluster, Johnson would much prefer to fight an election with Brexit already ‘delivered’. An election now would instead force him to explain his failure to keep his 31 October ‘do or die’ promise and also defend his bad deal.
