It's funny, I was just thinking about this story (the mid-air collision and the formation of the FAA) when reading about Elon Musk's determination to carve out a lawless frontier among the stars yesterday.
We didn't have an FAA until two planes collided over the grand canyon, which was the first airplane disaster to cost more than a hundred lives. "Regulations are written in blood," as they say.
We could not have commercial flight at nearly the level we do, for transit or shipping or any other purpose, without air traffic controllers and safety regulations. Could not.
"But the free market could do all that more efficiently!"

Nope. Here on earth, in actual history, the newly-formed aviation industry lobbied the government to create safety regulations because they believed their growth was constrained by the absence of them.
I think they were just less short-sighted than corporations today. Because they were right. Air travel and commerce became *much more* profitable with someone minding the big picture.

The only people who want to move to Mars under a rubric of "Mars is a lawless waste where the strong are free to impose their will on the weak, as in nature" are people who want to horrible things to other people.
"Mars: We Don't Live In A Society, Actually" is just not a winning tourism slogan.
If Elon Musk had some kind of gold-plated reputation for safety standards and such, then maybe he could sell it to people, but I just can't see his Mars venture taking off in a self-sustaining way without safety regulations.

One function I think these things have is, they reinforce the in-bubble view that their victory is overwhelming because their numbers are overwhelming, by giving a very dense visual metaphor for those numbers.

I see people involved in these "caravans" and "parades" literally saying, in so many words, "Where are the boaters for Biden?" and "Sleepy Joe could never get this many people out on the street!"
It's a parallel to something Trump was saying back in the 2016 election cycle: how can he possibly lose when he gets the most people coming to his rallies?

I saw one of those "items we all use wrong" promoted posts and one of the things was a gas station slushy with the dome lid on upside down and like, no? That's not better. That's so much worse.
The whole point of the dome lid being domed is that you can already fill up the space inside it. It's not *more* space when you put it upside down. It's the same space, upside down and intruding into the space of the cup. You get less slushy and lose the benefit of a lid.

Mfw I fail a saving throw vs. panic attack.

Happy Halloween! Picture of the poster @AlexandraErin in a blue blazer with a
The fact that the shirt fits me so poorly is not part of the cosplay; it's a consequence of trying to shop for clothes that I don't normally wear during a pandemic.
I'll take better pictures when I have a better outfit but I can't *not* put on a costume at least once during actual Halloween even if I have nowhere to go.

I love seeing people talking about "another lockdown". My household hasn't changed its routine since the end of February.
I miss writing in bars and cafes, I miss shopping, I miss walking around downtown. We were supposed to go see my father in April and go to Zion Valley in September. We had a whole season of dinner theater we wanted to see.
Normally Halloween is like the biggest night of my year. This year we're barely decorating (just putting out light projectors, some of which are also our Christmas display because red and green are versatile like that, and a Grim Reaper animatronic in a face shield and mask)...

As far as the cats are concerned, this might be the best Halloween ever, because we won't be standing outside in the front yard all evening.

(The cats think anyone outside is a devil. If we're outside, we are obviously face-stealing devils.)
Obviously I don't know what my cats actually think, but Tommy -- who comes immediately when I call her and mostly shadows me through the house -- will hiss and spit and bare her fangs at me if she sees me through a window.
I know when a delivery is here by the volume and intensity of Tommy's growling at the delivery person. She's learned to recognize the signs that I am expecting a delivery and will go take up a guard post by the window a few minutes before, which works out nicely.

Have you noticed how since Trump started just randomly saying "99%!" in his speeches about covid, people on here who defend/support him have started doing the same thing?

It's like the clearest example of the weird magical echolalia thing he depends on in lieu of facts.
I just blocked someone on here who insisted it was "confirmed" that President Obama and Joe Biden spied on Trump's campaign.

How was it confirmed? Well, Trump kept saying it. And saying "It's now confirmed."
(The 99% thing is meant to be an approximation of the survival rate, hence why he shouts it to downplay the threat of the virus. Wedging in an explanation here because I know people are confused about why he'll just say it, like he's saying something meaningful.)
